The motorcycle market fills up with big cubes in May

Market reports - The motorcycle market is full of large cubes in May - Full of large cubes in May

In just one year, the situation on the motorcycle and scooter market has completely changed: the 125 cc weighed down the results (-9.4%) while the large engines fueled (+ 14.3%). Figures, graphs and explanations in the new MNC balance sheet.

Full of big cubes in May

The French have bought – or more exactly "registered", but whether they are customers or dealers it comes down to the same thing since sooner or later all these vehicles end up taking the road – 16,148 motorcycles and scooters over 50 cc in May 2016.

By comparing this score with that of last year (), Site readers will see that the motorcycle market has grown by + 6.1%. But at the same time, the number of working days jumped by + 17.6%…

In May 2016, the 1st and 8th (public holidays!) Fell on a Sunday, the day when the prefectures and concessions are closed anyway. Less surprises for Ascension Thursday or Pentecost Monday, but in the end there were 20 working days against only 17 in May 2015.

Logically, the absence of three-day weekends – or even bridges – should have mechanically boosted the registrations of motorcycles and scooters. Especially after one (+ 0.8%). But the French had their heads – and their wallets – elsewhere…

The demonstrations, the capricious weather, strikes, shortages and tax returns have probably limited the attractiveness of our fellow citizens for the motorized two-wheeler … which could nevertheless have taken advantage of traffic jams and fuel restrictions to occupy the front of the stage !

But that would be forgetting the unfortunate tendency of our rulers to consider the motorcycle – or the scooter, all these things are the same – like! After all, what future can we imagine for a compact machine, practical, fun, pleasant, agile, fluid, easy to park, consuming little and requiring safe and responsible driving from the driver? ?

At the 125 cc radius, 4,789 motorcycles and scooters still found takers in May 2016, i.e. 250 more than but nearly 500 less than (-9%). Honda is the main culprit (-36%), the "fault" for the excellent scores of its Forza last year…

Behind the number one in the market, Yamaha (+ 10%) and Piaggio (+ 22%) have a good fifth month. In the middle of the Top 10 manufacturers, Peugeot, MBK and Kymco are less solid (respectively -6%, -2% and -3%) while at the bottom, it is downright weak: Mash is at -23%, Sym at -37% and Suzuki at -41%. Admittedly, the youngest, KTM, increases by + 4%, but this corresponds to only five more registrations.

Conversely, the large engines last month sold less well than in April (around 1,500 units less) but significantly better than in May 2015: the 11,539 registrations represent an increase of + 14.3%.

Among the best progressions we find Kawasaki (+ 30%), Triumph (+ 64%!), KTM (+ 25%) and Piaggio (+ 43%). Others like Yamaha (+ 6%), BMW (+ 13%) or Honda (+ 13%) increase their sales but lose market share. Finally, Suzuki (-13%) and Ducati (-27%) lose on both counts…
