Motorcycle license - Mandatory training for new B licenses wishing to drive a 125 -

As of January 1, 2007, new holders of a car license (license B) will have to undergo a compulsory three-hour training before being able to drive a 125.

Restored in July 1996, the B / 125 license equivalence allowed any holder of a car license for more than two years to drive a "light motorcycle (125 cc maximum and limited to 15 hp).

Ten years later, faced with the spectacular boom in two-wheelers in France (read our) and the increase in accidents which mathematically ensues, the government has just attached this equivalence to a "compulsory training lasting at least three hours", by decree n ° 2006-1811 of 23 December 2006 published in Official newspaper of 31 December 2006.

Modeled on the practical course of the road safety certificate (BSR), this training aims to "sensitize [motorists, editor’s note] the specific nature of driving a motorized two-wheeler and the associated risks", because "due to the lack of specific training, these drivers are more exposed to the risk of road accidents during their first driving times", estimates the Ministry of transport. The obligation applies to all motorists who will have obtained their driving license of category B from January 1, 2007 and who wish to drive a 125 from January 1, 2009.

"This decision results from the proposals resulting from the round table of May 2004 with associations representing users of motorized two-wheelers, and from the consultation carried out with professional organizations representing driving education establishments.", specifies the ministry (read), adding that"practical training will be given in an approved driving school or an approved association by a teacher qualified to drive motorized two-wheelers".

At the end of this course, a certificate of follow-up will be issued by the driving school. The candidate must then go to the prefecture to have the authorization to drive a 125 registered on his driving license..

And beware of anyone who does not follow the training and does not have the mention on his license: he will be liable to a fine of 135 euros (4th class) and a withdrawal of three points on his license … "The immobilization of the vehicle can be prescribed and additional penalties, such as the suspension of the driving license or the follow-up of a road safety awareness course, can be pronounced by the judge.", adds Road Safety.
