News - New motorcycle for 2017: a brand new R6 at Yamaha? - Used YAMAHA

At the top of MotoGP today, Yamaha is making a comeback in WorldSBK and in the trade with its R1 inspired by the M1. Could the Japanese manufacturer do the same in Supersport with a new YZF-R6? ? He would be tempted, according to the rumor.

Launched in 2006, the Yamaha YZF-R6 has evolved in accordance with the pace that prevailed in the segment of sports motorcycles: update after two years and (r) evolution after four … But since 2010 and the freezing of projects due to the, the tuning forks Supersport has not changed (read our).

To say that it has not moved would nevertheless be incorrect: in competition in particular, the R6 led three riders to the world title with, and (three riders who now race respectively in MotoGP, World Superbike and Moto2).

In the constructors’ championship, on the other hand, the current version of the R6 has won only one World Supersport title (). Dominated by the Reds of Tokyo and the Greens of Akashi, the Blues of Iwata would they want to do battle ?

A new R6 yes, but at what price ?

If the old R6 would certainly still have a say in WSSP against the ZX-6R in the catalog since 2009 (read our) and the CBR600RR revised in 2013 (read our), Yamaha would have every interest in launching a new model to mark the coup … The "marketing coup" of course, this tempting showcase with the aim of selling the new R6s but also the recent R3s, the future MT-07 Tracer or the stainless Tmax !

If the project is tempting, its implementation is more problematic: the development of a Supersport is as expensive as that of a Superbike and their manufacturing costs are close … while the selling prices are not: to attract customers in concession – and shoe -, a 600 must necessarily display several thousand euros below a 1000 … The margins of the manufacturer and its distribution network are then considerably reduced.

The only way to balance the balance would be to make volume. Recently, the SSP segment is even weaker than that of the SBK! The fault on the one hand to which penalizes in priority – exclusively? – small and medium-sized stock exchanges, on the other hand the lack of renewal.

The vicious circle between interrupted supply and insufficient demand is therefore closed. And the manufacturers are having a hard time breaking it … Kawasaki, for example, did not relaunch the sales of its little Ninja in the long term despite the arrival of the 636 version in 2013 (read our).

What about Ducati? This is a special case since the Bologna Reds keep increasing the displacement of their sports cars: 748, 848, 899 and 959 cc for its average (!) Displacement, 999, 1098, 1199 and 1299 cc. for its – very – large whose price swells proportionally and encourages bikers, even wealthy and experienced, to be satisfied with the little sister…

According to our colleagues at Young Machine, however, Yamaha would be ready to take up the challenge: a new R6 is indeed on the front page of the Japanese newspaper, opposite the next GSX-R1000 "of 205 horsepower!" and just behind the hypothetical CBR1000RRW and VFR1000R…

The new Yamaha Supersport would be modeled on the R1, itself inspired by the MotoGP M1! We therefore speak "in authorized circles" of a 4-cylinder 599 cc (regulatory for racing in Supersport category) with Crossplane setting, which would be housed in a cycle part and a casing close to the Superbike.

Plausible, the arrival of this new R6 (Euro4, ABS and "Full" in France, of course) is not formalized by Yamaha, only announced by the Japanese magazine. The same one that provided for the release of a 3-cylinder YZF-R675 three years ago supposed to compete with the Triumph Daytona 675 and MV Agusta 675 … So let’s beware of rumors … and stay tuned on Site !
