For 2015, Yamaha proudly raises its head and announces a weight / power ratio of 1 with 200 cannons – without forced air intake – and 199 kg with full (179 dry). Impressive values, of course, but which do not mark a real break with the competition.

New era, new tune or new R ?

Far be it from us the idea of ​​playing the "Valentino Rossi apprentices" or the jaded ones by demanding ultra-light motorcycles and stuffed with (over) power like Ninja H2, but just to note that if the R1 joins the best, it does not not introduce new references on this aspect as promised by Yamaha which spoke from the Cologne show of "new era"…

However, one important component must be considered before drawing any parallels: the 998 cc in-line 4-cylinder engine of the Japanese sportswoman in 2015 retains its atypical Cross Plane crankshaft setting, a provision derived from MotoGP which gives it a distinct character. more marked than a "classic" 4-legged set at 180 ° like those of the ZX-10R and other S1000RR. Not to mention its rocky sound, worthy of a V4 !

To increase its performance, Yamaha engine manufacturers have boosted its compression ratio to 13: 1 and closed the angle of its valves. The combustion chamber is redesigned in the shape of a "roof", while the volume of the air box gains "23%" to reach 10.5 liters, which is the equivalent of more than half of its gasoline tank (17 liters, one less than in 2014) !

Thanks to titanium, connecting rods with fractured heads are "40%" lighter than previous steel ones. The new forged aluminum pistons would also be lighter, a weight saving which notably favors the reactivity of the engine in its climbs by reducing its inertia..

Injection is now done with 12-hole injectors which vaporize the mixture towards the rear of the intake valves, while the exhaust – which abandons its positioning under the saddle to exit in the low position – is reconfigured and receives a new valve.

Top level cycle part

The chassis remains of the perimeter type in aluminum, the engine playing the role of stiffener. The main changes to the 2015 R1 are the new swingarm design – shorter by 15mm – and the use of magnesium on the rear loop and rims to reduce weight..

No less than 870 g were thus grappled on the weight of the wheels, a very important item in terms of handling because they are unsprung masses. The wheelbase is reduced from 1415 to 1405 mm to promote agility, but the offset and hunting remain identical to the previous model so as not to hamper stability..

The fully adjustable suspensions are based on a 43mm Kayaba inverted fork and link-mounted monoshock. Braking is entrusted to two 320 mm discs at the front, clamped by radially fixed monobloc calipers (220 mm and single disc at the rear). Note the presence of braided hoses, an equipment often not retained on Japanese sports cars to contain costs.

This braking system is connected to an ABS, for the first time on a Yamaha sports car. This racing equipment is partially coupled from front to rear as on the BMW S1000RR. The action on the right pedal only summons the rear caliper.

Cutting-edge electronics

In terms of electronics, the R1 2015 makes a real leap forward thanks to the use of a "six-axis inertial sensor". Concretely, this means that the electronic brain ECU is informed via three gyroscopes on the pitch, roll and yaw rate of the motorcycle, while other sensors indicate to it the movements forward / backward, left / right and up / down..

All this data – in addition to that collected by the injection controlled by a ride-by-wire – is analyzed continuously … no less than 125 times per second! Thanks to this riot of infirmations, the ECU of the R1 knows exactly the position and inclination of the motorcycle and accordingly adopts the action of the adjustable traction control TCS (Traction Control System) already in force on the previous model..

Even stronger: not only the slip of the rear wheel is controlled on demand, but also any lateral drifts. Because no, traction control does not prevent highsides: it can just minimize them by limiting the slip. In the event of a sudden lateral stall, on the other hand, the traction control is powerless, hence the installation by Yamaha of a control system of "stall" derived from MotoGP: the Slide Control System (SCS).

The R1 2015 also inherits a nose-up control system, also configurable, as well as a start assistant as on the RVS4 APRC and the new S1000RR. Finally, a shifter is integrated as standard while four different driving modes are available via separate injection maps..

The instrumentation uses TFT matrices – as on the Ducati Panigale – and consists of a large rectangle of 109 mm whose brightness is automatically adjusted.

A pure pistarde, available in an even more radical version !

Visually, the R1 more distinctly mirrors that of MotoGP’s YZR-M1. This is especially true for its front end, which inherits a forced air intake in the same shape as the Rossi and Lorenzo motorcycles..

To reinforce the mimicry, the designers have opted for LED position lights located in the extension of the side panels, which gives the impression from certain angles that the motorcycle is devoid of optics, like on a racing motorcycle..

Yamaha does not hide the fact that its R1 is much more oriented towards a practical "circuit" than before: on the 24 pages (!) Of the press kit, the manufacturer does not use the word "once" route ", while references to the track punctuate almost every paragraph !

And yet, as exclusive as it may already appear, this R1 will be available in an even more precious and sophisticated special edition, intended for "professional teams and very experienced pilots".

Yamaha R1 M version

Called "YZF-R1M", this ultimate version receives Ohlins electronic suspensions as standard, connected to all the sensors already on the bike. A data acquisition system that can be exported via a Wi-Fi connection to a computer and a tablet is also part of the game. And thanks to an Android application, it would even be possible to intervene on certain aspects such as the driving mode! "Chip factory", the Yamaha? Certainly !

Its fairings are entirely made of carbon, up to the seat cowl, while the aluminum of its tank and its swingarm is polished. Finally, Bridgestone tires specifically developed for it – with a "special rubber" … – are installed on this bike which will be available in limited quantities, with pre-reservation with the dealer from December 2014..

The YZF-R1 "standard" and its special version R1M will both be available from March 2015, respectively in blue or red for the first and in carbon "Silver Blu" for the second. The price has not yet been communicated, but it is a safe bet given the debauchery of technology that the price borders on or exceeds 20,000 euros in the basic version … and climbs even higher for the R1M.
