Yamaha remakes the diversion

News - Yamaha revamps the Diversion - Used YAMAHA

The Diversion 600 reappears in the Yamaha catalog: with this new product for 2009, the manufacturer is openly targeting the Suzuki Bandits! And the entry level does not land alone: in addition to the new R1, a Midnight 950 and two WR125 are on the program….

Disappeared at the end of 2003 due to the adoption of the Euro2 standard, the XJ600 Diversion left Yamaha without an entry level. A situation which explained – in part – the loss of Yamaha’s leadership in large engines the following year.

"We will be offering a replacement for the Diversion 600 but I cannot tell you when, Alexandre Kowalski, communications director at Yamaha France, told us during our 2004 annual motorcycle market review (read).

After five years of absence, therefore, the XJ6 Diversion does reappear in the Yamaha catalog: by supporting the Fazers and Tmax, will this 2009 novelty allow the brand with three tuning forks to beat Suzuki and its Bandits? Response at the start of 2010 in our 2009 market report !

A new Diversion for 2009 !

"The style of the XJ6 Diversion can be summed up in three points: performance and pleasure for the pilot, medium displacement, timeless and attractive style.", insists Yamaha in its press kit. All that remained was to announce a tidal wave of daisies and it was the tidal wave assured in the dealerships !

Because we must admit that the new Yam ‘does not lack assets: a 4-cylinder in-line from the FZ6 reworked in low and mid-revs, a simple but proven cycle part, a refined style but well "in tune" : the 2009 Diversion has little to do with the XJ600S of motorcycle schools !

Thus the engine is borrowed directly from the FZ6 … But in its "Diversion" version, the Yamaha mill is more docile: "the engine of the XJ6 Diversion is completely new: cylinder head, crankcase, intake / exhaust systems, clutch and selection have been specially developed for this new medium displacement", assure the Japanese.

However, the maximum power of 78 horsepower would suggest that the engineers simply took the engine of the Fazer 600 "deflated" from 2007 … But this is not the case, since the Diversion reaches this value 1,500 rpm lower than the Fazer, at 10,000 rpm precisely.

On the other hand, the "new" Yamaha engine claims a maximum torque of 59.7 Nm from 8,500 rpm, against 51.6 Nm at 10,000 rpm for the 78 hp FZ6, and 63.1 Nm – still at 10,000 rpm – for the FZ6 "S2" which develops 98 horsepower.

Granted, the intake and exhaust valves remain the same on all three models, but the new XJ6 benefits from a new cylinder head, new camshaft profile and redesigned intake ducts..

"The high compression ratio of the new engine (12.2: 1 like on the Fazer, Editor’s note!) provides high torque at low and mid-range and provides excellent control in the frequently used 4000-5000 rpm range", analyze the Japanese engineers.

Equipped with forged aluminum pistons which circulate in cylinders having undergone a "ceramic composite surface treatment, which uses a unique technology developed by Yamaha", the 4-cylinder obviously benefits from electronic injection.

The housing – of "32 bit", underlines Yamaha, thus introducing a new reference value destined to be regularly doubled, like the powers of video game consoles in the 90s? -, the case, therefore"ensures precise injection control.

And if there again we could have suspected Yamaha of having flanked the Diversion with a Fazer case, "changes have been made to the sensors and software to optimize the character of the XJ6 Diversion and ensure excellent performance", assures the manufacturer !

With this injection and its 4-in-1 exhaust system fitted with a silencer with three expansion chambers, the new Diversion "naturally" meets the current Euro3 standard. "The lambda sensor allows the injection unit to instantly adjust the air / fuel mixture optimally, so as to ensure efficient operation of the catalyst", conscientiously recalls Yamaha.

Seconded by a new clutch "featuring an internal thrust cam system, renowned for its smoothness"and by a new selection system"ensuring flexible and easy gear changes in all situations", Yamaha does not hesitate to present this new motorcycle as"an ideal choice for pilots looking for a medium displacement with good value for money"… To try, therefore !

Aluminum on the Fazer, the frame "Diamond type"The new Diversion is made of steel tubes 31.8 mm in diameter and 2.3 mm thick. The engine is attached to it at four points. Thus, Yamaha assures that its designers"were able to create an attractive and simple frame configuration".

This remark can also be applied to the entire cycle part: conventional 41 mm fork, rectangular section swing arm suspended by a simple shock absorber "Monocross", 120 mm aluminum rims at the front and 160 at the rear … We therefore stick to" the basics ", which is not pejorative !

The wheelbase of the Diversion remains substantially identical to that of the Fazer (1440 mm), while the chassis angle opens slightly (26 ° against 25 °): "the geometry of the chassis is designed to ensure a balanced and predictable behavior responding to the slightest demands of the rider", promises the manufacturer.

The saddle is installed at 785 mm from the ground, or 1 cm less than on the Fazer, which should partly compensate for the weight of the new 600 (216 kg all full made for the ABS version, 5 kg less in " standard ") during maneuvers at very low speed.

In terms of braking, Yamaha decided to reuse the 298 mm double discs, which differ from those of the Fazer only in their thickness: "thinner than 0.5 mm", they allow "a reduction in unsprung weight of 180 g"The same goes for the calipers, whose hoses are simply more rigid"for a better braking feeling.

As for the style of the Diversion, the brand’s marketing and communications specialists sum it up as follows: "a high-performance and easily controllable sporty roadster". Aesthetically, the shapes of the half fairing and the tank (17.3 liters) give the Diversion a definite link with the current Yamaha production..

On the other hand, the almost invisible low pot, the long footrest plate – driver and passenger – and the refined rear buckle are reminiscent of a certain Kawasaki ER-6f … A motorcycle which, with the Suzuki Bandit 650 S and Honda CBF600, is precisely one of the direct targets of this 2009 novelty !

To satisfy ever more demanding customers, Yamaha has equipped the Diversion with an adjustable handlebar and a new complete dashboard: "digital speedometer, analog tachometer, odometer / trip meter, fuel gauge and coolant temperature gauge", specifies the press kit.

Finally, the ABS option will be available: essential on a self-respecting road! The date of arrival in concession of the new Diversion – blue, red or graphite – remains unknown, just like their price … Information that the Site will not fail to relay as soon as possible, as it will influence the success of this new 2009 product. !

A Midnight Star … light !

"Classicism sets the trend for the category of customs under 1000 cc", observes Yamaha in the introduction to its press kit.

Gold "until now, the choice offered to customs enthusiasts has been limited to V-twin over 1000 cc, rather heavy machines, likely to intimidate less experienced bikers.", recognizes the manufacturer…

Fortunately for this category of bikers, Yamaha will be offering the 950 Midnight Star in 2009! Little sister of the 1900s and 1300s, this new bike will be powered by a V-Twin – what else ? – inspired by the 1300 which will cub exactly 942 cc.

"For the sake of compactness, this V-Twin uses the same three-axis architecture (crankshaft / front camshaft / rear camshaft) as the 1300, but the elimination of the balance shaft gives it a power curve. very different", specify the engineers who have opted for square dimensions supposed"optimize performance from low to medium revs".

The technical data sheet announces a maximum power of 54 hp at 6,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 76.8 Nm from 3,000 rpm. With 278 kg on the scale, the 2009 novelty therefore fits into the canons of the cruiser category.

The icing on the cake, the new Yamaha twin cylinder whose cylinders are set at 60 ° "is particularly distinguished by its asynchronous ignition sequences: the combustion is set at 300º and 420º, which gives the engine pounding a very pleasant characteristic rhythm which contributes to the attraction of the machine and gives the exhaust its hoarse note and powerful". What to compete with the big Americans ?

Cycle part level, the Midnight Star 950 also plays in the big leagues: 18-inch front wheel, 320 mm discs at the front and 298 at the rear, 17-liter fuel tank, 1,685 mm wheelbase (i.e. only 10 shorter than the 1300 cc cadet), 28.6 mm wide belt and 170 mm rear tire…

The suspensions are borrowed from the Midnight 1300, but "its settings have been revised and adapted to the 950", explains Yamaha, specifying that"the hardness of the springs has been reduced to 5.4 N / mm (i.e. a decrease of about 27%) in order to make the suspension work smoother and improve comfort".

Another concession to the famous maxim "it has everything of a great", the seat height of the new 950 is limited to 675 mm, or 4 cm less than the 1300. "This newly shaped saddle is refined at the front, where it coincides with the narrow rear part of the tank. This makes it easier for the driver to put his feet on the ground when stationary or traveling at low speed in traffic jams.", details the manufacturer.

"With its compact engine, streamlined frame, low seat and very contemporary lines, the 950 Midnight Star shines with its handling and writes a new chapter in customs history.", summarizes the brand with three tuning forks which will offer its 2009 novelty in three colors (blue, red or black). Unfortunately, dates and prices have yet to be discovered…

And two more 125

Finally, 2009 will see the arrival of two new 125s: the WR125R and the WR125X. One year after the release of its WR250 R and X, Yamaha therefore offers A1 and B licenses a small enduro and its supermotard version, both powered by the engine of the "sports" YZF-R125.

However, the single-cylinder 4-stroke, four valves and single overhead camshaft has been revised, just to stick to the program of the two novelties..

The intake and exhaust have been retouched in order to "to offer a progressive and predictable throttle response from low to medium revs", assure the engineers, while the maximum values remain the same: 15 hp at 9,000 rpm and 12.2 Nm 1,000 rpm earlier.

On the other hand, if the 6-speed gearbox and the primary ratio remain unchanged, the secondary ratio makes the enduro and the supermot pull ‘shorter than the sports car: five teeth have pushed on the crown of the rear wheel ”to optimize performance in all circumstances, including in town, on the road and off-road".

Little more for sporting activities on these two machines: the presence of a folding selector, " original element on all TT racing machines of the brand", welcomes Yamaha in passing !

Cycle part level, the WR125R and WR125X share the same steel frame, a front fork of 41 mm in diameter, a Monocross shock absorber adjustable in preload (7 positions), a dashboard with digital display of the speed, fuel gauge, odometer and two partials…

Of course, some elements differ from one model to another. The R (enduro) has 21-inch front and 18-inch wheels shod with mixed gums, a 240mm petal disc, a saddle that peaks at 930mm and 240mm fork travel..

The X (supermoto) is equipped for its part with 17-inch wheels and sports tires, a 298 mm disc, a saddle perched at 920 mm – all the same! – and a front travel limited to 210 mm.

Both available in "Racing" blue, the enduro is also available in "Yamaha" black while the supermoto is available in "Sport" white. As with the Diversion and Midnight Star, the price and release date of these two new models remain well-kept secrets … !
