The 2018 edition of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, Sunday, was marked by a magnificent fight between the two motorcycle manufacturers most involved in this famous American hill climb: Ducati and KTM. Results, interviews and on-board images !

  • Every year – or almost – since 1916, a few days after the Isle of Man, the equally famous and perilous hill climb of Pikes Peak takes place, this mountain located in Colorado (USA) which rises to 4302 meters from height.

However, the 96th edition will go down in annals as one of the closest: more than the new absolute record set by the French Romain Dumas in his Volkswagen – electric car! -, the motorcyclists will retain the extremely small gap between the first two motorcycles…

Barely 8 tenths of a second! At the end of an ascent of 19.93 km dotted with 156 bends !!! It’s not as tight as the last Tourist Trophy, but it’s rarely – never? – seen at PPIHC (Pikes Peak International Hill Climb) !

Winner of the event in 2011 and 2012 (record in the second year, on the fully asphalted route), Carlin Dunne hoisted the Multistrada for the third time on the top step of the podium in 2018, despite difficult conditions, a small form and sharp competition…

In his interview at the top (see the first video with on-board camera over the entire course!), The South African rider points out that in the upper section of the course, about 25% of the grip was missing. So it’s not easy to brake late then to put big gas in the hairpins, or to take a lot of angle in fast curves !

If the state of the track is the same for everyone, the state of health is unique to each. However the n ° 5 Ducati was reduced by a cold at the beginning of the week, then struck by "the mountain sickness that I had never felt before", he testifies, the nose still well taken…

The head – clearly not – in the clouds…

But Mister Dunne did not give up and was rightly rewarded, narrowly winning over Rennie Scaysbrook, Australian biker exiled in the USA, responsible for testing Cycle News. The latter also climbed the Pikes Peak in less than 10 minutes at the controls of his … Unfortunately for the KTM rider, he would have had to go under 9’59.1 to gain the victory !

It is therefore a winning return that Ducati offers itself at the "Pic du Pique": for the record, the Bologna firm had won the race four years in a row from 2010 to 2013 – the last, also on one – and was withdrawn after being by Jeremy’s "Fu & # * in" Toye.

Katoche consoles himself by keeping the climb record for a two-wheeler: last year, Chris Fillmore completed the very first climb of his career in 9’49.625 on the handlebars of the maxisportif orange maxiroadster. Better: since Sunday, KTM can boast of having two records…

The Mattighofen firm has indeed set the new benchmark time for intermediate displacements thanks to the same talented Mister Fillmore and the brand new (see the second video). The novelty 2018 has not gone far from the feat: it ends its race within 5 seconds! Small but sturdy, the 790 !
