Loss of motorcycle driving license in France

Today, it is unnecessary to complete the formalities with the prefecture or sub-prefecture. The online request as well as the declaration of loss is made via the teleservices of the National Agency for Secured Titles (ANTS). Administrative procedures are now done by internet. The same goes for a lost vehicle registration card, now called a registration certificate.

Since September 1, 2014, the renewal of the driver’s license for loss or theft is paying. You will have to pay the sum of 25 €, to be paid online, as well as the regional tax which varies according to the departments.

You will be informed by email when your declaration of loss has been reviewed. You can download a certificate of loss. This document, valid for two months, allows you to drive while waiting for the dispatch of your new license or duplicate. You will thus be in order in the event of a control by the police.

In addition, you can monitor the production and transmission of your driving license online..

Loss of motorcycle driving license abroad

The steps to be taken vary depending on the third country and the nature of the trip. If you are on vacation in a country of the European Economic Area (EEA), you will have to make a declaration of loss with the local authorities. Contact your consulate or embassy who will check with the French authorities the validity of your motorcycle license before transmitting the information to the local police who will give you a provisional document. You will then be able to drive.

Out of Europe, declare the loss to the local police authorities and contact the French embassy to find out the procedures to follow which are specific to the country.

Yes you live abroad, several scenarios are possible. In a European country, the French authorities are no longer competent: turn to the local body. Outside the European Union, make sure that the French license is recognized, in which case you will need a local title or an international license.

If you are a student, on an internship or assignment and you are required to drive abroad, you can apply for a license from the local authorities who will check your driving rights via the European Union driving license network "RESPER".

In the event of loss outside Europe, you must contact Crepic, the Resource Center for the Exchange of Foreign Driving Permits and International Driving Permits, to request the production of your permit, by mail exclusively to the following postal address :

Paris Police Prefecture

DPG / SDCLP

Resource center for the exchange of foreign driving licenses and international driving licenses (Crepic)

Motorcycle driver’s license theft

Start by making a declaration of theft to the police station or the gendarmerie brigade. A receipt, valid for two months, allows you to drive, but only in France.

During this period, you must apply for a new driver’s license or a duplicate. To do this, go to the ANTS website. The procedure will also cost 25 €.

The new license is sent by mail to your home. Please note, if you are absent, the postman leaves a calling card.

You then have 15 days to collect your permit from the post office. After this period, the license is returned to the sender and you will have to apply for a new driver’s license.
