Road rallies - 8th Corsica rally: Velardi Day! - Hot night ...

Christophe Velardi, imperial at home on the handlebars of his Ducati 1200 Multistrada, left no chance for the mainlanders and won the Corsican event of the 2014 French rally championship. The championship is in full swing… Report.

Hot night…

The night departure, initially scheduled for 9:00 p.m., is postponed by 30 minutes due to significant delays during the day. In passing, we salute the organizer JMP Racing for having maintained three loops out of the four scheduled for the day, despite many unforeseen events.

The two night loops will fortunately take place more serenely, the accidents of the day having certainly calmed the spirits…

On the first pass on the Urbalacone special, Luc Deiana was still rife and took the best time riding his Honda 450 CRM in 1’47.30. But Julien Toniutti wakes up on the handlebars of Team 2B / Deletang’s Yamaha MT09 and slams the second fastest time in 1’51.86, ahead of Christophe Velardi and his Ducati 1200 Multistrada (1’53.19).

Cognocoli – Monticchi at night: Christophe Velardi regains the upper hand on the handlebars of his Ducati 1200 Multistrada and slams the best time in 2’51.54, more than a second and a half ahead of his friend Luc Deiana and his Honda 450 CRM (2 ‘ 53.13). Laurent Filleton (Aprilia 1000 Tuono) takes third time in 2’54.01 … A full second ahead of his opponent Julien Toniutti (Yamaha MT09), fourth time in 2’55.03 !

Small break between two loops on the return to Porticcio. The battle rages as much between the two Corsican leaders who compete for the specials as between the two leaders of the championship … Hot !

And it starts again for the last loop of the rally. In Urbalacone, Luc Deiana takes cover and secures the best time of the special (1’46.14) more than 4 seconds ahead of his direct opponent Christophe Deiana (1’50.19). Third time for the leader of the 2014 championship Julien Toniutti who obtains a time of 1’50.44.

Luc Deiana is in a good position to win the rally: more than a special and voila! But nothing is ever won until you cross the finish line, especially in motorsport….

The competitors are separated by 30 seconds (which allows the organizers in particular to save time compared to the minute-to-minute differences of the old regulations). But coming to check in at the time control before the last special of the rally, Luc Deiana, focused on this ultimate special which was going to be able to make him win the rally, does not cut his engine while waiting for his start of the special which was to be given in a few minutes…

The ambient heat helping, the small Honda single-cylinder is impatient before this latest rush and overheating … which implies a direct reaction of overflow of the coolant like a pressure cooker. !

The liquid that spills everywhere soiled the tires of the bubbling Honda 450 CRM at the start … And what had to happen happened: fall on a slip from the first corner! The driver got up quickly and set off again, but this special was very quick and Luc Deiana only obtained the 56th time in 3’43.42, almost 50 seconds more than on the first pass of this night stage. !

Christophe Velardi did not weaken on the handlebars of his Ducati 1200 Multistrada and posted the best time in 2’49.63. Laurent Filleton’s Aprilia 1000 Tuono took second time in 2’53.76, ahead of Julien Toniutti on Yamaha MT09 in 2’55.62.

As for the Monos, things are going better tonight for the mainlanders: in the previous special, the category leader in the 2014 championship, Florent Derrien, obtained the fourth fastest time riding his KTM 690 SM, followed by Benoit’s Yamaha 450 YZF Nimis (fifth). The reverse having occurred in the first lap, Benoit Nimis obtains the fifth time on his Yamaha 450 YZF, first Mono, during this last special.

Among the girls, the Galinette Sonia Barbot obtained the 33rd time in this last special on the handlebars of her Suzuki 1000 GSXR but dominated, as during the day, the female category..

Then it’s the last return to Porticcio for the arrival of the rally.
