With 947 motorcyclists killed in 2000 (12% of the total of 8,170 road deaths), 704 in 2010 (18% of the total of 3,992), 631 in 2013 (19% of the total of 3,268) and 624 in 2014 (18% of the total of 3388), motorcycle mortality fell by 34% between 2000 and 2014 and by 11% since 2010, notes ONISR.

For 2014, the very rainy summer – "the month of July was the rainiest since 1958", notes the ONISR – "had an impact on motorcycling outings and limited summer mortality, in which these users are still very present. The increase in mortality (of bikers, Editor’s note) observed in the first half of the year is largely offset by the sharp drop in the summer ".

The official body also estimates the number of serious injuries at 35,000, "according to an extrapolation from hospital data, which includes road accidents unknown to the police such as certain accidents without third parties, therefore not included in the file. BAAC accident national ".

75% of very serious injuries affect the chest

Due to their lack of bodywork, motorcyclists are logically the majority in these 35,000 seriously injured who would number "15,000 drivers of motorized two-wheelers, 10,000 motorists, 5,000 cyclists and 4,000 pedestrians".

Among these 15,000 seriously injured motorcyclists or scooter riders, "approximately 2,500" present "very serious" injuries mainly affecting the thorax (75%), "hence the recommendations concerning the wearing of the airbag vest", underlines the ONISR.

Biker injuries then concern the head and upper limbs (more than 50%), then the abdomen and lower limbs (more than 20%).
