Ducati is working on the delicate transformation of its iconic "Mostro" without hesitating to shake up its fundamentals: more consensual in appearance, the replacement for the Monster 821 completely leaves aside the iconic trellis frame around its 937 cc twin. ! Presentation.

This new generation of Monster will certainly be talked about: first for its design, then because of its technological breakthroughs. These two aspects are intimately linked since the first thing that jumps out is the disappearance of the tubular steel chassis, one of the visual signatures of the Ducati roadster since 1993. !

Exit, therefore, this interlacing of tubes behind which the L-twin was as if entered with a shoehorn: place an aluminum shell frame fixed on the cylinder heads and which integrates the airbox, as on the Panigale V4. Shocking? Yes and no. On the one hand, because the tubular trellis had already given way since the engine had become a carrier…

Besides, what is the original concept of the Monster? A "raw" roadster, designed around the frame of the sports Ducati (the 888 originally). Change of epoch, change of paradigm: the Ducati Superbikes of yesterday were distinguished by the V2 engine and their tubular chassis, today the Panigales receive a V4 and a shell frame! Of which act…

A logical development, of course, but not as inevitable as Ducati suggests: KTM’s MotoGP successes prove that a "good old" steel trellis is far from being outdated! In addition, the rapprochement between Monster and Ducati sports motorcycles has lived: it is rather the Streetfighter V4 that the task of embodying an undressed Panigale falls. !

Lighter and more powerful

Advantage of this "reframing": the Monster 2021 is 18 kg lighter than the previous Monster 821 (including 1.9 kg on the only rear loop with glass fiber reinforced support). This new vintage displays 188 kg all full, rather flattering for a motorcycle of this displacement

The cubic capacity, let’s talk about it: the Monster adopts the twin-cylinder of 937 cc which equips in particular the SuperSport 950 and Hypermotard. Reworked and Euro5 approved, this twin retains its desmodromic distribution (phew!) To display 111 hp and 93 Nm, up 2 hp compared to the previous one.

These performances raise the Ducati to the same level as a Yamaha MT-09, for example, which develops 119 hp and 93 Nm since its new overhaul for 2021. This new Monster – which also abandons the usual numbered suffix – is positioned strategically, letting the 147 hp Monster 1200 play its role of big arm.

The ergonomics also evolve significantly with a higher saddle (820 mm), a handlebar closer to the bust – 70 mm – and footrests lowered by 10 mm in addition to being advanced by 35 mm. The position should be more natural, breaking with the curled up posture of older generations of "Mostro".

Who will complain? Undoubtedly those nostalgic for the die-hard Monster, as exciting as they are demanding (ah, the bestial S4R!). The same people will deplore the "Japaneseization" of the lines, which fail to maintain this subtle association between bestiality and delicacy. Not to mention the elegant mono-swingarm, still with absent subscribers…

However, how can you blame a motorcycle for offering more comfort and performance, while losing – a lot – of weight? At the technical and commercial level, this approach is not open to criticism: on the contrary, even! From a cultural and identity point of view, on the other hand…

Full of electronics

This new Monster also renews the now usual electronic equipment of Ducati: three driving modes, anti-skating and start assist. Standard double-acting shifter and 4.3-inch instrumentation complete this rich endowment, while tilt-sensitive ABS regulates the heat of the Brembo radial calipers.

Another sign of the times: LED turn signals have a new "sweeping" function, like on high-end cars. This device is notably present on Audi … which owns Ducati! Should we see it as an "arrow" clue to those responsible for this deep mutation of the Monster ?!

Still, this new Monster is displayed at a price of 11,290 euros in red, gray or black. That is well below the Monster 1200 at 14,490 euros, which continues to oversee this "Monstrous" success saga: for a long time the best-selling Ducati (now surpassed by the Multistrada), the Monster has sold some 350,000 copies since 1993 , all versions combined !
