The Yamaha MT-125 launched in 2014 gets a menacing new front end inspired by the MT-09 and the variable-valve motor discovered last year on the YZF-R125. What legitimizes its status as the most expensive 125 cc roadster on the market ? MNC went to check in Malaga (Spain) for a first test.

Like a grown up. The Yamaha is rewarding because it is equipped like a medium displacement (sturdy steel perimeter frame, radial front caliper, inverted 41 mm fork and very nice aluminum swingarm shorter by 30 mm, to reduce the wheelbase from 1355 to 1325 mm).

Finishes. Paintings and welds are also neat. We appreciate the pretty aluminum parts such as the fuel cap and the footrest plates.

Invariably 15 hp. The 124.7 cc single cylinder inherits a variable distribution – quite rare on small displacement – which optimizes power distribution while reducing fuel consumption and polluting emissions. However, performance remains limited to the regulatory 15 hp.

More techno, less torque. Curiously, this VVA (Variable Valve Actuation) system does not improve the torque despite its change of cams at 7400 rpm: the maximum value even drops from 12.4 to 11.5 Nm! This loss caused by anti-pollution standards is identical to that observed last year on the YZF-R125: normal, it is the same engine. !

Consumption down… This engine with dimensions of 52×58.6 mm introduces an anti-slip clutch and a new gearbox. It would also be more sober: 2.3 l / 100 km, down 5% according to Yamaha. MNC recorded 2.4 l / km on the instrument panel during our very short test drive.

Decreased autonomy ! This appetite of a sparrow does not, unfortunately, serve the cause of autonomy since the capacity of the tank at the same time drops by 1.5 liters (from 11.5 to 10). Yamaha justifies this reduction by the desire to centralize the masses and improve comfort. Yeah …

Ergonomics. In addition to a thinner tank, the MT-125 receives a new single-seater saddle, advanced footrests and raised handlebars. The more relaxed position is more comfortable despite the hardness of the seat perched at 810 mm.

Euro5 Ready.Despite its 2020 novelty status, the MT-125 remains up to Euro4 standards. Its engine is however "prepared" for Euro5: "it is a question of costs", answers Yamaha to us questioned by MNC on the usefulness of this postponement. To date, only and are Euro5.

MT Fest. Yamaha organized this year in Valencia (Spain) the first festival dedicated to fans of the MT range: the MT Fest with rides, stunt demos, equipment and accessory stands. Given the success of the approach, the manufacturer plans three other editions in 2020.
