WSBK - Bayliss returns and Charpentier re-begins -

This weekend in England was the eighth round of the World Superbike. Bayliss "Superman" makes his comeback despite a more than tenacious Haga while Charpentier sees Curtain join him in the general Supersport classification ! Suspense.

After Kagayama’s double in the Czech Republic (read), we were waiting the day before yesterday for Troy Bayliss (Xerox Ducati) to return. The official Ducati rider, who proudly wore a special decoration on the occasion of the film’s release "Superman returns", did not disappoint…

It all started during the Superpole on Saturday, which the Australian literally flew over, winning by more than four tenths over his great rival this season, Noriyuki Haga (Yamaha Motor Italia). Behind the two championship leaders are the two Winston Ten Kate Honda of Karl Muggeridge and James Toseland.

At the head of the second row are the reigning world champion Troy Corser (Alstare Corona Extra Suzuki) and his compatriot Andrew Pitt (Yam Motor Italia), ahead of the two official Kawasaki of Regis Laconi and Chris Walker..

Behind them are Kagayama (Alstare Corona Extra Suz) and three young wolves with long teeth: the guest driver Hill (Virgin Mobile Yam) – already noticed at Silverstone (read) -, Lanzi (Xerox Ducati) and Nieto (PSG-2 Kawasaki) ).

Second French, Sebastien Gimbert (Yam Motor France Ipone) ranks 15th while Fabien Foret – by mutual agreement with the Alstare Suzuki team – has decided to put an end to a difficult and disappointing 2006 season.

In Supersport, Sebastien Charpentier’s time (Winston Ten Kate Honda) is reassuring: the French will start from 2nd place behind Broc Parkes (Yam Motor Germany) but above all ahead of his number one enemy, Kevin Curtain (Yam Motor Germany). Kenan Sufuoglu on second Ten Kate Honda completes first row.

The second row is original since it is made up of Stephane Chambon (Gil Motor Sport Kawa) – it feels good to see him again at the forefront! – and the two pilots wildcard (Northpoint Eckerold Honda) Crutchlow and Camier ahead of the winner of the Misano event: Roccoli (Yam Team Italia).

Tiberio (Megabike Honda) takes the lead of the third row while Maxime Berger (Gil Motor Sport Kawa) closes it. David Checa (GMT94 Yam), Matthieu Lagrive (Intermoto Klaffi Honda) and Julien Enjolras (Tati Team Beaujolais Yam) shoot together from 19th to 21st place, followed later by Gregory Leblanc 29th (he will not finally compete in the race ) and by the new recruit of Tati Team Beaujolais Yam: Stephane Duterne.

First Superbike race

In the first round, Troy Bayliss is imperturbable despite the incessant attacks from Nori Haga. "I fought with Nori but didn’t show all my cards"will admit the pilot n ° 21.

Indeed, in the 15th lap, the hopes of the Japanese go up in smoke: Bayliss "Superman" flies to Ducati’s 250th victory in the World Superbike, leaving Haga to compete with the local James Toseland..

Starting from the front row but beaten at the first corner by Troy Corser, the Briton quickly recovered third place and completed a flawless course allowing him to even manage the second step of the podium. But the relentless escape of Bayliss frustrates Toseland who will try to do better in the second round…

"In the last five laps I couldn’t push as hard as I wanted"regrets for his part Nitro Nori who will leave for the second round with his second R1. Curiously, his teammate Andrew Pitt had a race with a diametrically opposite profile.

Once the red lights were out, the Australian barely retained his position on the grid and completed the first lap in 7th position. He easily overtook Kagayama and Muggeridge in the very first laps then got rid of "the shadow of 2005 champion" Troy Corser to secure a nice fourth place..

As with Yamaha, there are significant differences between the two riders in Team Suzuki. Starting with a hard rear compound, Corser struggled to keep pace with the leaders and gradually fell back into the race until sixth place: "the rear tire held 10 laps"will be surprised the crocodile…

A "performance" beaten by his teammate since it is in only five laps that the Japanese overcome his soft rear rubber! However, Yukio manages his lack of grip better than Corser and finishes fifth in the first race..

Behind Walker who completed a solo race in 7th position, the battle rages between former Continental Circus drivers and English wildcards. Barros, Xaus, Laconi, Nieto and Hill do not part for most of the race, giving rise to superb passes of arms.

Special mention to Alex Barros who, if he does not know how to make a great start on the handlebars of his CBR1000RR, gives us spectacular climbs !

On the French side, Laconi had a good first race and finished in an honorable 9th place. But the Moselle wants to return to his warm-up settings to grab a few places in the second round … As for Sebastien Gimbert, he steals from Martin and Iannuzo the point of 15th place despite an error in the 3rd lap.

Supersport Race

The Supersport race is eagerly awaited by the spectators as they hope for a strong reaction from the leader Sebastien Charpentier, who is only 10 points ahead of Kevin Curtain in the general classification..

And the Frenchman meets the expectations of his fans by retaining his second place from the start, despite his shoulder and hip pain. Stalled half a second from Parkes, General Seb suffers but keeps up the pace.

Kevin Curtain for his part missed his start and is in 7th place in the first lap behind Tiberio, Crutchlow, Sufuoglu and Camier. But the Australian quickly overtook the group of young people and slowly but surely climbed back up on the Sufuoglu who themselves gained ground over the leading duo.

Unfortunately, from the 12th round, Charpentier accuses the blow: "my body was completely destroyed, no more strength, my muscle power just is not what I had before my accident"notes the world champion.

On lap 13 his teammate Kenan doubled it, followed by Curtain on the next lap. But the coup de grace is dealt in the very last lap by Harms and Crutchlow who deprive him of the 4th place to which he was clinging despite the fall of his time … The French therefore finished 6th

Despite three very quick last laps, Curtain finished "only" 2nd behind an untouchable teammate. "It’s not always easy to get ahead and even though the bike was running perfectly I could hear the engine making a bunch of imaginary noises."will recount Parkes who did not let himself be distracted.

Thus, Kevin does not overtake Sebastien in the provisional classification. Better, with a higher number of victories (4 against 1), the French officially remains in the lead…

The two leaders are now tied on points and Broc Parkes is only 12 points away. Hopefully the month of cutoff will allow our champion to fully recover and properly defend his world crown. For Sebastien – and the official Yamaha – the 2006 season begins again !

The other French did not defend themselves badly: Stephane Chambon on the handlebars of his ZX-6R is 7th, Tiberio and Berger respectively 12 and 13th. In Team GMT 94, we congratulate the courage of David Checa (21st) who wanted to run despite the advice of Christophe Guyot.

Matthieu Lagrive is ranked 19th, Julien Enjolras is 23rd and Stephane Duterne (28th) finishes in the same lap as the first.

Second Superbike race

The return of the 1000cc on the track is done in climatic conditions similar to the first race, facilitating the last small adjustments. Suddenly, we find more or less the same protagonists.

Starting with the three inseparable Bayliss, Haga and Toseland. The Australian, who showed what he can do at the end of the first leg, appreciates "the tough but correct battles with Nori". Except this time, Bayliss is too greedy…

"I probably abused a little by letting Nori walk past me twice. I wanted to appreciate his health and the second time was too many"regrets the kangaroo. Because Nitro Nori is in good shape, thank you for him !

Determined to "not to see your exhausts again", the Japanese once again demonstrated his talents and signed his first victory of the season, the 20th of his career in the World Superbike."It’s so good to win"assures Nori who bitterly remembers his fall at the head of the race during the first event of the season (read)…

We also note during this second race the superb performance of Regis Laconi. The French – much better off than in the first round – can not resist a supercharged Andrew Pitt (finally 3rd) and battle in the third round with Kagayama.

Regis still manages to stay in Pitt’s wheel which goes back to Corser. The latter – wearing the "hardest rear tire possible"- barely a little less than in the first round but cannot maintain his 4th place beyond the 16th lap.

Then it was Toseland to crack under the pressure of Pitt while Laconi was slow to overtake him. The Australian’s R1 is too far away when the French ZX-10R gets rid of the British’s CBR. Regardless, beyond the result, we will especially remember that Laconi has found his Ninja "easy to fly".

Sebastien Gimbert for his part had to settle for a difficult 14th place, just behind his teammate Norick Abe.

Beaten in the very last corner, Bayliss nonetheless increases its lead in the championship: 77 points over Haga, 88 over Toseland and 114 over Corser! Eight races to go to the end of the season, the Ducati rider is far from having mathematically secured his title … but the hopes of his competitors are very slim.

In the constructor championship, Ducati is far ahead with 317 points ahead of three Japanese who are in a pocket handkerchief: Honda takes second place (267 pts) ahead of Suzuki (259) now overtaken by Yamaha (259). Kawasaki is 5th with 140 points while Petronas remains stuck with 4 points since April 23…

Next meeting on September 3 in Assen !
