The last victory of a Bimota in World Superbike dates back to April 23, 2000: Anthony Gobert took advantage of a disputed first round on the declared "wet" track of Phillip Island to win at the controls of his SB8R n ° 501.

We unfortunately remember that the Australian Superbike champion (national title in 1995) could not even finish his season because of a "misunderstanding" between the various sponsors of the team, a dark affair which had also marked the beginning. of the agony of Bimota (read in particular).

The brand, created in 1966 by Bianchi, Morri and Tamburini, has nevertheless had some very good hours in World Superbike: "in the early days of the WSBK, Bimota was a famous name with many victories to his name thanks to Davide Tardozzi, Giancarlo Falappa and Stephane Mertens", recalls Infront, delighted to welcome a new manufacturer !

According to the promoter of the championship, the manufacturer of Rimini would have opened yesterday with great fanfare its research and development department with the aim of reinvesting motorcycle competition at the highest level.

Research, development … and commitment ?

In good Italian Phoenix – Benelli, MV Agusta or Moto Morini are the same species! -, Bimota therefore launches a new challenge after its unsuccessful foray into Moto2 in 2010: 30 points scored by the HB4 (Honda engine and Bimota tubular trellis chassis), and as a unique achievement a 4th place in Assen for the Thai rider Ratthapark Wilairot.

For its new project, Bimota called on a former pilot, this time Spanish: Ruben Xaus himself! "I have been part of Bimota for a few months", confirms the one who drove this year for Honda Ten Kate,"and I will try to bring all my experience as a world famous pilot".

"I decided to create a development project", continues the ex-n ° 111:"a partnership with Edo Racing, which could allow greater flexibility and faster service so that the company can focus entirely on planning and prototyping".

The first tests have already taken place in Almeria (Spain): "we just checked different solutions on the chassis (of a DB8, that is to say the eighth Bimota with Ducati engine according to the photo, Editor’s note) ", reveals Ruben, claiming the position of team manager.

"The brand is set to work on a World Superbike Championship machine in the near future", warn the organizers of the WSBK:"it is absolutely open to the possibility of doing it this year, the bike can be ready from the first round"…
