The weekend had started well for Regis Laconi: fourth time in practice in the first qualifying session and provisional pole in second, Regis had enough to feed solid hopes on a Monza circuit that he particularly likes..

Since 2003, the Frenchman has indeed always managed to qualify on the front row at Monza. An excellent opportunity for a result within easy reach therefore presents itself to him this weekend, especially as the Kawasaki PSG-1 has just received a significant engine development through the French tuner Akira..

Unfortunately, in free practice just before the Superpole, Regis made a mistake and broke the little toe on his right foot … A mishap that did not allow him to do better than seventh (and second row) on the grid.

Nevertheless, the bike works well and for the French rider, it is the main thing! Lighter connecting rods and pistons, new camshafts and new valves: Akira announces a power gain of around seven horsepower. A very important step forward for the Kawasaki PSG-1 team, immediately exploited by Regis Laconi.

"The difference is significant, especially in terms of acceleration", Regis explains to Site:"at Monza, the first partial corresponds to a part of constant acceleration. In practice I had the best time in this section and my teammate the third fastest time. It’s very encouraging for the rest of the championship. First for the next meeting at the end of May in England at the Silverstone circuit, where it is necessary to have a lot of acceleration to approach the pit straight after the slowest chicane in the championship !"

But before talking about Silverstone, there is still work to be done to improve reliability because at Monza, the engineers at Akira had made the engine reliable for just 25 laps … Not enough to do two rounds of 18 laps, so.

Sunday morning, when the pain in his foot made him wince, Regis decided to use his best engine in the first run. Unfortunately, betrayed by a completely destroyed rear tire, he had to return to the pit prematurely and finished eighth in the second heat (read our full report,).
