Very quick since his return to the WSBK, Davide Giugliano has just signed his second pole of the season in Portugal. The Ducati rider is ahead of the Ninja Sykes and his teammate Davies. Rea has to settle for 8th place because of a crash…

Author of the best time of the three free sessions used to establish the list of the ten drivers automatically qualified for the second Superpole session, Jonathan Rea was again the fastest at the very beginning of the famous SP2 on racing tires..

But at the start of his second lap, the n ° 65 Kawasaki proved too greedy and finished his qualifying session in the gravel pit. The – very wide – leader of the championship fortunately recovered without any injuries from his long slide at the exit of the second curve.

While Johnny sheepishly rejoined his box on his scooter, his little comrades quickly put on their qualifying tires and mostly beat JR’s reference time. In the lead just one minute from the checkered flag, Haslam was beaten thirty seconds later by Davies, then by Sykes…

But immediately after Kawasaki n ° 66, the Ducati n ° 34 rolled over the finish line! Author of the Superpole for his return to competition at Imola, Davide Giugliano doubled the stake in just three attempts this year !

Tom Sykes, meanwhile, will be on the first row of the Superbike starting grid tomorrow for the fifth time in a row. He will be keen to repeat his impeccable performance two weeks ago in Donington: "Major Tom" had won his first victory of the season, and his first double in the wake..

Third time in SP2, Chaz Davies will post his own factory Panigale outside the Portuguese front row. Like his Italian teammate, "Chazie" will try to be more consistent than last year: the Welshman had fallen in the first round and finished third in the second in the rain (7th then 2nd for Davide).

Less than a tenth of a second from the front row, Alex Lowes took a remarkable fourth place at the helm of his Suzuki, which he was struggling to adapt to his new Magneti Marelli electronics. Proof that the GSX-R1000 is not yet developed: Randy de Puniet has only signed the sixth fastest time in SP1 (16th therefore).

The fastest driver on hard tires during the "warm-up" laps of SP2, Leon Haslam finally qualified in fifth position on soft tires. The n ° 91 Aprilia is ahead of Matteo Baiocco: the Italian rookie and his Ducati climb for the first time on the second row of a Superbike grid !

Sylvain Guintoli also had his best qualifying session of the year. He will start from seventh place and will naturally seek to improve his best racing result on the handlebars of his Honda Fireblade: three fifth places obtained in Australia, Thailand and Italy..

Our world “Number One” will be ahead of two riders who should help him move up the rankings over the two rounds of tomorrow: Jonathan Rea on the # 65 Kawasaki and Jordi Torres on the # 81 Aprilia. The French, the Northern Irishman and the Italian should ensure a great atmosphere in the race !

Last of SP2, Ayrton Badovini (BMW Italia) and Leandro Mercado (Ducati Barni) join David Salom (Kawasaki Pedercini). Credited with the best time one minute from the end of SP1 but beaten by Lowes, Mercado, Salom and VDM, Leon Camier (MV Agusta) took 14th place, just ahead of Roman Ramos (Kawasaki Go Eleven).

In sixth row, Randy de Puniet will be accompanied by Nico Terol (Ducati Althea) and our third French representative: Christophe Ponsson on his Kawasaki ZX-10R Pedercini, faster than the two Kawasaki Grillini riders of Santiago Barragan and Niccolo Canepa.

The two BMWs entered by Team Toth were once again last in free practice and were unable to take part in SP1. Gabor Rizmayer and Imre Toth will start from the back of the grid for tomorrow’s two Superbike races. First departure at 11:30 am (French time): stay tuned !
