Site Analysis of the SBK World Cup in Brno

Naturally, what we remember most at the end of this eighth round of the 2010 World Superbike (read) is the gulf that now separates Max Biaggi (1st with 352 points) from Leon Haslam (2nd with 284 points ) in the provisional drivers’ classification: 68 points, i.e. more than two victories and a third place !

In his adopted country – the one of the Brno track which saw him climb to the highest step of a world podium for the 10th time yesterday – the Roman Emperor has not wavered, although he openly aimed for a fifth brace this season, the third in a row…

At the controls of his RSV4 Factory n ° 3, the Italian pilot once again demonstrated his extreme mastery of the Czech track, wide and undulating, requiring control with speed and fluidity: a circuit "Biaggi approved" in short.

The Aprilia rider is getting closer and closer to a title that would make history: Massimiliano would be the first Italian to obtain the supreme title in the Superbike category, on an Italian motorcycle, moreover..

But because of a certain Jonathan Rea, Max did not leave "his" land with the maximum number of points in his wallet! Indeed, the young Irishman – transparent since the Kyalami event in South Africa – took advantage of a Fireblade suddenly freed of all "chattering" to win in the 1st round and steal five precious points..

Swapping with Biaggi his place of winner for that of dolphin in the second round, Johnny scored important points which also allow him to pass Carlos Checa in the championship: 203 points for the Honda rider against 189 for the private Ducati rider..

To win his third victory of the season – after his double at Assen – the n ° 65 did not hesitate to jostle Biaggi from the start of the race, even going so far as to perform an incredible outside on Max in the last corner of the race. first round of the first round.

It just goes to show that the versatile CBR1000RR can be a formidable weapon, provided the circuit pleases it! Moreover, the CBR will lead the second round during the first seven laps, the only Japanese ahead of four Europeans (an Aprilia, a BMW and the two factory Ducatis) !

Sole representative of BMW following the package of Troy Corser (read), Ruben Xaus could not compete with the Aprilia of Biaggi or the Honda of Rea. The Spaniard, however, provided a good part of the show by achieving his best result riding the S1000RR in the first round, then sending his Bavarian waltz in the gravel in the second round..

Thus, Ruben remains faithful to its reputation: "capable of the worst as well as the best", the n ° 111 will have to show itself in its best light during the four remaining events to ensure a – good? – handlebars next year.

The same goes for Noriyuki Haga, capable this year of the best in racing but also the worst in testing. Falling twice during the qualifying session, the Japanese started on Sunday from 15th place … This is to say if Nitro Nori had to put the turbo on when the lights went out. !

In the top 6 at the first corner (!), Haga could not do better than 6th then 5th this weekend in Brno. Falling in the first round and 8th in the championship, his teammate Fabrizio paradoxically seems faster than Haga, 5th in the provisional 14 points from colleague Checa, on 1198 Ducati also, but deprived !

Would Carlos deserve his place in the official team more than Michel or Nori? The question must undoubtedly arise in Bologna. The choice of Luca Scassa – the little Italian who walks harder and harder on his private Ducati, even if it means getting laid … – cannot be ruled out for next year.

But given the current turmoil in MotoGP (Stoner has officially returned to Honda, Rossi is trying to get back to business as quickly as possible on an M1 with whom he has had so many good times), do the big guys have time to think about the next World Superbike season ?

Another rider with the record provided but with disappointing results this year, James Toseland once again showed the end of his fairing this weekend! Without a podium and victory, the Englishman made an incredible comeback in Brno in the second round.

According to him, after having almost stalled at the start, the No. 52 of the official Yamaha team would have taken the first turn last. Thus, he would have overtaken no less than seven drivers in his first lap! Then he continued his fantastic ride until the 4th place obtained against a very "recovered" Haga too..

But the most recovered of all this Sunday was undoubtedly Cal Crutchlow, author of a fourth pole this year – his first season in WSBK as a reminder – a nice podium in the first round and promised the same fate in the second … if his Pirelli hadn’t let go !

Forced to return to the pits in the middle of the race, the English n ° 35 in no way hid his annoyance with his rear tire while his team took care of fitting his R1 with a new tire of the same reference as the first. !

The Yamaha rider was not the only one to strongly criticize the new Pirelli compounds, offered since the last event in Misano. Haslam in particular assures that its sudden lack of performance is due to these new tires that it has already decided to boycott. !

The new Italian tires are working, however: Crutchlow Himself recorded the best time in the race when he returned to the race in the 2nd round! More than performance therefore, it is the consistency from one set of tires to another that seems to bother a good number of pilots..

Of course, Pirelli does not echo this in its race report on its official website. In extreme weather conditions – blazing sun and 57 ° C on the track in the 2nd round – the transalpine manufacturer is pleased, for example, that our national Sylvain Guintoli was able to equal his best performance of the year (4th at Phillip Island) . Case to follow, on Site !

Let us note in conclusion that Jakub Smrz did not shine at home in Brno … The Czech rider fell during his two rounds: mown down by Neukirchner from the first turn of the first round – in the company of poor Vermeulen -, the n ° 96 left alone at the fault five laps from the finish in the second heat.

Smrz had undoubtedly imagined a very different baptism this weekend for the Aprilia, which is replacing a Ducati this weekend that his team knew very well. The last four rounds of the championship will therefore be as many test sessions for Jakub in order to prepare for the 2011 season….
