Jonathan Rea managed the first Superbike race this morning in Aragon perfectly. Predicted by Tom Sykes at the start of the race, attacked by Chaz Davies at the very end, the championship leader held on to the shock and won for the fourth time in five races….

First Superbike race

Jonathan Rea got off to a great start from his fourth place on the grid but Tom Sykes took the lead in his No.66 Kawasaki, ahead of Chaz Davies, Jonathan Rea, Leon Haslam, Xavi Fores, Jordi Torres, Nico Terol, Leandro Mercado, Ayrton Badovini, Sylvain Guintoli, etc..

Sykes immediately widened Davies in the first half of the circuit but the Ducati official came back in the second. Tom completed the first lap in the lead, three tenths of a second ahead of Chaz and a second ahead of his teammate Jonathan Rea who leads the peloton made up of Haslam, Fores, Torres, Mercado and company.

Alex Lowes, who missed his start, returns to the pits without having completed a single lap. The new electronics are not yet developed: this third event is more like a test than a race for Suzuki pilots. De Puniet is still riding, but in 18th position ahead of Christophe Ponsson.

In front, Tom Sykes continues his race in front but Chaz Davies keeps his Ducati in the aspiration of the Kawasaki. Still third, Jonathan Rea and the second factory Ninja are still just a second behind Ducati n ° 7. Haslam is two seconds behind the leader and must contain Fores and Torres.

Our first representative, Sylvain Guintoli, occupies the 10th position and is a good second behind Badovini, Terol and Mercado who are fighting for 7th place. But the Frenchie must above all concentrate on the driver who follows him … and double it in the 4th lap: his teammate and WSSP champion Michael van den Mark !

Slowly but surely, Jonathan Rea joined the leading duo: without forcing too much on his machine and his tires, "JR" managed to turn a little faster than these main rivals and found himself in the wheel of the official Panigale at the start. of the 5th round.

Leon Haslam and his RSV4 on the other hand failed to maintain their pace at the start of the race and were more than four seconds behind Sykes and his ZX-10R. Behind the English n ° 91 are still two young Spaniards: n ° 112 Fores and n ° 81 Torres.

Posted in Davies’ rear wheel for three laps, Rea unleashed an attack in the fourth corner of the 7th lap and cleanly overtakes his compatriot. The No.65 Kawasaki is now aiming for its counterpart at No.66, which has been in the lead since the red lights went out. At the same time, Randy de Puniet in turn leads his Suzuki in the pits…

The fight intensified in the second group also when the "Spanish champion of Germany" attacked and passed Leon Haslam! Xavi Fores takes fourth place and lets the n ° 91 manage the pressure of the other local driver: his teammate, the "Spanish Elvis", Jordi Torres !

At the forefront, Jonathan Rea joined Tom Sykes. Chaz Davies, on the contrary, had to give in and find himself a good second from the two factory Kawasaki. Johnny overtakes Tom at the end of the straight at the very end of the 11th lap but changes his mind and stays behind his teammate.

The n ° 65 duplicated his attempt on the next lap but preferred to pass Tom in the fourth curve, as he had passed Chaz. The latter seems to be enjoying a second wind. Very fast in the winding, the Ducati rider almost hit the rear wheel of Sykes in the middle of the pif-paf preceding the straight line !

Determined, the Welshman replicated his attack in the chicane the following lap and this time passed in front of the Kawasaki! Tom recovers his second place in the straight line but "Chazie" plants a masterful braking at the end of the straight line to regain the advantage !

There are only three laps left to go and Davies spins four tenths of a second faster than Rea! Sykes for his part is quickly giving way and will have to settle for the third step on the podium. At 13 seconds away, Haslam and Torres are still fighting for fourth place.

The last lap is launched and the two leaders put a lap on Rizmayer. The latecomer shifts cleanly, like his teammate Toth moments later. Jonathan Rea applied and managed to outrun Davies by several lengths, preventing any attack … until the final chicane !

Back in Rea’s wheel in the last section, Davies plunges his Ducati under the Kawasaki but comes out a little less strong. Stuck in "Johnny’s" aspiration, "Chazie" tries to brake the championship leader but widens in the final curve. Chaz Davies therefore accompanies Jonathan Rea to his fourth victory of the season !

Tom Sykes completes this new 100% British podium – they have all been since the opening of the championship at Phillip Island! – while Leon Haslam is ahead of his teammate Jordi Torres under the checkered flag. Giugliano’s replacement, Xavi Fores finished in a good sixth place ahead of Terol, Mercado, Guintoli and Camier.
