MV-Agusta F4 1000 R 2011

The pencil stroke is discreet, almost too shy. Why does the designer have his hand paralyzed, sweat running down his back, and his brain tortured? Quite simply because it redesigns one of the most sumptuous motorcycles in history: the MV-Agusta F4. Many thought that the work of Massimo Tamburini would remain frozen in the marble of the altar of sport ….

They were wrong. The sportswoman of Varese is reviewed from top to bottom. But there is no question of upsetting this silhouette which has become legendary, to the point of being the identity of the manufacturer. So we had to apply ourselves, measure each gesture, come up with a new version that was both different and identical. An impossible bet that this new F4 tries to meet. More prominent, more lively in its details, the 2010 version seems to be only a slight evolution. Retouched headlights, more prominent air intakes, fairing panels with larger vents, slight strokes in the shapes, and above all, the sublime flutes under the saddle are no longer exhaust organs but are presented under a square shape, more modern, confusing but not devoid of charm. Equipped with LEDs under plexiglass, the indicators are highlighted with a small cap integrated into the retro.
Under the bubble, the song is different. The dashboard has completely changed. It is now a fully digital, 2D type XL format meter. Enough to bring together a host of information on the constants of the machine. Here is for the form. Those who see beyond glamor expect technical progress.

Same displacement, same internal dimensions, the 4 cylinder only seems different to you by its red cylinder head cover…. Think again ! MV-Agusta has upgraded its boiler so much that the factory considers it to be a completely new engine. These range from the redesigned, more resistant connecting rods to the crankshaft whose inertia has been increased by 50% to the intake ducts. Oh well, here’s the interesting thing: the 2010 F4 gets variable intake by changing the height of the ducts. Popularized by the Yamaha R1, this process was nevertheless highlighted in the spotlight by the F4 1000 Tamburini in 2005. The Italian took her time to make her range benefit from this system. Breathing well being as important for a grinding wheel as it is for us, expansion tank and voltage regulator have been moved to provide more space for the air box, which partly contributes to the increase in power of the 2010 F4: 186 , 3 horsepower, obtained at a slightly higher rpm than before.

Electronics invade the 2010 F4. It is fitted with a Marelli 7BM ECU. In other words, advanced engine management incorporating Traction Control and a system that adapts the injection maps according to the gear ratio engaged. The brand has also (and finally) taken the time to integrate a coded key lock.
Let’s focus on the heart of the engine and on the big weak point of the F4, reliability. Lubrication has been greatly optimized, with a more compact and efficient oil pump. The 60 gr light water pump delivers 65% more flow. Let us hope that these developments will make it possible to limit interventions on the F4; because in competition, the beautiful loses its splendor; risks of the water pump seizing and engine clamping being as inconvenient as they are unpredictable. Machine designed in the image of competition, it shines there only if it is not exposed to it for too long.

MV-Agusta F4 1000 R 2011

Demanding for the pilot, the new F4 thinks of him and offers new ergonomics, with a shorter, narrower chassis…. and lighter. What will grab his attention the most will be the effectiveness of the new framework. Impossible at first glance to distinguish the differences with the 2009. However, the tubes have a modified diameter and thickness. The swingarm is also new, lengthened by 20mm and repositioned to provide more traction. The rear mobile assembly was able to grab 1.2 kg. It is not only there that the slimming cure was mobilized: 1.2 kg gained on the tank, ditto for the rims (they take the shape in stars of the first F4), 3 kg of released on the trim (300 gr just for the screen), 600 gr on the gearbox housing, another 1.6 kg on the alternator side – In total, the F4 melted 10 kg.

MV-Agusta F4 1000 R 2011

S, R, 312 R, 1080 CC, Senna, Tamburini…. We can no longer count the different versions of the F4 1000. This 2010 version is the first of the series to dare to review its design. It becomes more efficient, lighter, more powerful, just to stay at the top of its game. Now she has to prove herself on the circuits, and the competition will not give her any gifts. The Superbike will bring him the respect of athletes, Endurance will be more demanding, ruthless for its mechanics.
