EICMA 2019

The BMW outfitter Wunderlich presented three new protectors for the Shiftcam Boxer at the EICMA: engine protection cover and valve cover protector made of plastic, as well as the engine and manifold protection “Extreme” made of aluminum.

If you want to protect the cylinders of the sweeping boxer engine from falling rocks and involuntary ground contact, you can’t avoid protectors. Especially when the expensive Shiftcam technology is in it. Whimsical has now responded with a light, tight-fitting component: the valve cover protector made of special plastic. The engine protection cover for 2020, the “Heldenbrust”, as Wunderlich calls it, is made from the same material. The third innovation is again made of aluminum: The “Extreme” engine and manifold protection.

To protect against stone chips, grit, dirt and water, the BMW outfitter has now added a new engine protection cover for the R 1250 GS to its range. Instead of heavy metal, it is made of a special, impact-resistant and hard-wearing plastic, precisely shaped and is also intended to ensure high mechanical stability. The cover is attached at four points and promises easy assembly.

Wunderlich grants a right of return of 60 days and a guarantee of 5 years. The cover is only suitable for the R 1250 GS, available in black and from December 2019 for 99 euros.

Wunderlich valve cover protector

The new set of valve cover protectors is made from the same plastic as the “Hero’s Breast”. It protects the exposed cylinders of the Shiftcam boxer without being thick: with a very narrow gap, they lie precisely against the valve cover. In between, shock-absorbing segments that are in direct contact with the valve cover are installed as buffers. A stainless steel insert is also integrated, which should prevent the cover from grinding through and thus preventing oil loss in the event of a fall.

With the enclosed kit, Wunderlich promises easy assembly. Here, too, there is a 60-day right of return and a 5-year guarantee. The protector is suitable for the models R 1250 GS, R 1250 GS Adventure, R 1250 R, R 1250 RS, R 1250 RT. Available in black, from December 2019 and for 199.90 euros.

The valve cover protection comes with a combination of plastic and stainless steel.

Wunderlich “Extreme” engine and manifold protection

The aluminum protection covers the underside of the engine, the front silencer and the manifold and, thanks to the special hydroforming process, should be particularly stiff and precise in shape. This results in a lower material thickness and less weight. The ground clearance is not reduced by the protection and it is also not possible to get caught by the shape. Supports for shock decoupling are installed between the protection and the motor housing. Maintenance work, such as draining oil, is possible without dismantling.

The protector comes as a complete installation kit, is 3 mm thick and is available in silver anodized or black powder-coated, suitable for the R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure. The same applies here: 60 days right of return and 5 years guarantee. The protection is available from December 2019 for 279 euros.
