As every year, Harley-Davidson is the first of the major motorcycle manufacturers to present the new products for the coming year. Above all, an extremely luxurious Electra-Glide. The subsidiary Buell presents a 1200 City X.

German-American understanding is sometimes based on rather crooked numbers. For example, there are the cubic inches, one of the many units that Americans use to describe the size of cavities. 103 cubic inches is the displacement of the new engine that powers the Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Limited. Seven more than the standard twin cam engine, which – some with a balance shaft, some without – is still used in all other models in the Touring, Dyna and Softtail series. One cubic inch is 16.3871 cubic centimeters, so the new 103 engine would be just under a 1688. However, if you calculate more precisely in the finer spun metric system, you get 1689.75 cm3 with a 98.4 millimeter bore and the unchanged stroke of 111.1 millimeters.

The 96 engine has 1584.96 cm3, which corresponds to 96.71 cubic inches, so it is actually a 1585 or 97. Just so that nobody gets confused when it is specified with 1584 cm3, the 103 on a Harley website even with 1803 cm3. Was there one fluid ounce (29.574 cm3) too much from a half-gallon bottle (1.895 l) with bourbon involved? It is important that the large motor presses six HP and ten Nm more on the test stand role than its smaller brother, the most expensive and most luxurious of all E-Glides, which means that it has a propulsion system commensurate with its class. The frame of the touring models was only redesigned last year; it picks up the engine in a vibration-decoupled manner, which is why it can do without a balancer shaft. The basic price of 28,705 euros already includes a wide range of equipment, in addition to ABS, heated grips and on-board socket, ultra-limited buyers get a complete luggage system with suitcases and inner pockets. An audio system from Harman / Kardon, an intercom and cruise control are also standard. The aluminum wheels got chrome-plated spokes, the trim parts a two-tone paint. You can choose between black / black, blue / black and red / black.

With a price of 20195 euros, the Fat boy Special, a slightly lower version of the Fat Boy. It is available in matt or gloss black and its lines follow the other softtails. The tank shape and the frame with the hidden struts of the rear suspension as well as thick 140 and 200 tires are typical of this series. Both Fat Boys carry them on disk wheels. The 96 engine is bolted rigidly to the frame and was therefore equipped with a balancer shaft. As with all Big Twins including the 103 series, the transmission got a reinforced gear wheel for fifth gear. In the form of the XR 1200 X Harley brings the next symphony in black – a rogue who thinks of the company’s current sales and liquidity crisis. But you can’t help yourself: Despite the undeniable fate, the color of mourning on the XR X is quite massive. In the past model year, the natural aluminum engine, the swing arm or the exhaust system with their matt chrome-plated covers made for a sparkling appearance, these parts are now all in matt black. On closer inspection, the red springs on the rear Showa struts are noticeable, and when compared with last year’s model, their reservoirs.

At least on this point, the technology of the naked bike, which is tailored to European customers, has also been slightly modified. Whether this justifies a price increase of 880 to 11,870 euros? After a two-year hiatus and on the occasion of its 30th birthday, the Dyna Wide Glide is returning to the Harley model range for the season. That is why a limited series of 3,000 units, like in 1980, is given a tank that is artistically painted with flames. The Wide Glide is a real chopper with a large, narrow wire-spoke front wheel, far forward fork and a full 1715 millimeters wheelbase. The puristic appearance must be worth at least 14,795 euros; it is available in the inevitable black for this price. With paint, also on the limited flame tanks, costs 15035 euros. The most important novelty in the Buell line-up is the XB12SX City X. Since 2005, this lively motorcycle with the short wheelbase has only been offered as the XB9SX, ie with the 984 cm3 V2. A plus of 218 cm3, 13 PS and a full 25 Nm will ensure more driving dynamics and serenity at the same time. At 690 euros, the price premium is pleasantly moderate. The City X was the first Buell with translucent, i.e. transparent cladding parts; it is a matter of honor that she keeps this as 1200. A small change can be reported from the 1125 CR. You get a Streetfighter handlebar made of butted aluminum tube. All Buells will be equipped with new indicators and LED taillights as well as new lambda sensors for the coming season.
