New motorcycle registrations February 2021
20 percent minus the same month last year

In February, too, the two-wheeler market lags behind the previous year, which is not only due to a bad start in 2021, but above all to the record numbers in 2020.

In this article:

  • Causes of fat minus
  • Compared to 2019
  • Individual segments under consideration
  • Euro 4 sale
  • Conclusion

In February 2021, two-wheelers posted a decline of over 20 percent. In January, the two-wheeler market was almost 50 percent behind the same period in the previous year. Overall, the minus could be reduced a bit.

Causes of fat minus

What does the fat minus in terms of motorcycle registrations have to do with? On the one hand with the weather: February 2020 was the warmest February since the weather was recorded in 1881. And of course, motorcycle-friendly weather promotes sales.

Another reason for the record figures in the same month last year could also be the entry into force of the new driver’s license regulation, which allows motorists to drive a 125cc scooter or a 125cc motorcycle under certain conditions. Almost 80,000 drivers took advantage of this opportunity to extend their driving license last year. As soon as spring 2021 is in sight, we expect further increases in the number of registrations in the 125cc area as well.

Compared to 2019

If we leave out the unusual beginning of 2020 and the then new driving license regulations and take a look at the new motorcycle registrations from the beginning of 2019, then there is still a minus for February 2021: 16.5 percent fewer two-wheelers were new compared to February 2019 authorized.

Individual segments under consideration

All segments were affected by the decline in registrations. Of the 21.1 percent decline in the two-wheeler market in February 2021 – 15.8 percent was due to motorcycles, – 37.3 percent to light motorcycles and more than – 30 percent to scooters and light scooters.

Euro 4 sale

One or the other Euro 4 machine can still be found in the new motorcycle registrations. The Euro 5 standard has been in effect for motorcycles since January 1, 2021, but machines that were already manufactured at the beginning of the lockdown in April 2020 are allowed to use a “Corona exemption” to be resold. This also explains the Royal Enfield Bullet Electra 500 sold in February 91, which put the model in 20th place in the new registration ranking. You can see the top 20 new motorcycle registrations in the picture gallery – including the percentage of new registrations that are commercial.

Conclusion

Cumulatively, the two-wheeler market in Germany is now almost 27 percent down on the previous year at the beginning of the year. The minus is made up of the -56 percent in January and -21.1 percent in February. The new motorcycle models, which are now gradually arriving, will ensure an upswing in April and May at the latest.
