As of August 2020, the overall market for motorized two-wheelers almost cracked the overall market in 2019. Light motorcycles and scooters in particular are responsible for the steep curve.

The two-wheeler market posted an increase of almost 60 percent in August 2020 compared to the same month last year. The growth is no longer just a race to catch up, which can be explained solely by the lockdown at the beginning of the motorcycle season (March and April). Because at the end of August the total market has already reached 166,027 new registrations in the year to date. In 2019 there were a total of 168,093 new registrations by the end of the year. That means that by the end of August 2020 we are only around 2,000 units away from the full year 2019 result.

Vehicle groups of the overall market

The overall market for motorized two-wheelers includes motorcycles, light motorcycles, large and small scooters as well as trikes and other three-wheel and light four-wheel vehicles. This overall market already achieved an increase of 54.4 percent in July 2020 compared to the same month of the previous year.

That is why the two-wheeler market is growing

It seems like not only have many motorcycle purchases shifted from March and April to a later time in the year, but also that some vacation coffers have been looted in favor of motorcycle or scooter purchases. In addition, the new driver’s license regulation plays a role, according to which motorists can add the code 196 to their class B driver’s license in order to be able to drive light motorcycles – and light scooters. The light motorcycles have a maximum of 15 hp, but can go over 100 km / h. A large part of the almost 60 percent growth in light motorcycles, which adds up over the entire period from January to August 2020 inclusive, can be attributed to this. The light scooters even show an increase of over 90 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. In addition, it cannot be ruled out that private transport will come into focus again and that, due to the high volume of traffic in metropolitan areas, cars will appear to be becoming increasingly unattractive for commuters. Many drivers are therefore switching to light scooters.

In the period from January to August 2020, compared to the same period of the previous year, the following are among others in the plus: Kawasaki, Honda, KTM, Yamaha, Triumph, Husqvarna, Royal Enfield, Indian, Moto Guzzi, Benelli, Fantic, Zero and MV Agusta. BMW, Harley-Davidson, Suzuki, Ducati, Aprilia, Beta and SWM have fewer new motorcycle registrations (as of the end of August 2020).
