new regulation for driving school motorcycles from 2019

Driving license class A
From 2019 larger motorcycles are compulsory

From January 1, 2019, new requirements for driving school motorcycles will apply. Class A training bikes have to become more powerful and heavier.

Driving schools and also learner drivers will have to deal with more powerful and heavy driving school motorcycles from January 2019. The reason for this is an EU directive that was passed in 2013, but Germany has postponed its implementation until January 1, 2019.

At least 50 kW and 180 kg

The new guideline for test motorcycles of the driving license class A – and thus also training motorcycles from driving schools – provides for a minimum power of 50 kW, a minimum displacement of 600 cm³ and a minimum weight (empty weight) of 180 kilograms. In terms of cubic capacity, the guideline allows a fall below this level by up to 5 cm³, and a weight reduction of up to 5 kilograms.

For driving school motorcycles with electric drive, which are hardly found in everyday life, the ratio of power to empty weight must be at least 0.25 kW / kg.

Until now, test and training bikes had to have at least 40 kW of power and a displacement of 600 cm³ (minus 5 cm³ tolerance possible). There were no specifications for weight.
