Continental presents the third generation of the street-legal sports tire ContiSportAttack. After the predecessor ContiSportattack 2 left the customer’s wishes unanswered, especially in terms of wet grip, the development department claims to have made significant progress here. The specifications for the ContiSportAttack 3 also included better durability.

With the athlete on the move to the track day on the racetrack, do a few quick turns and then back again – without changing the tire. Something like that turns out to be Continental presented the customers of the ContiSportAttack 3, which is due to be launched in the first quarter of 2016. It closes the gap between the touring sport-oriented ContiRoadAttack 2 Evo and the ContiRaceAttack racing tires and the upcoming ContiTrack.

Rubber compounds of different hardness in the middle of the tread and on the tire flanks have proven themselves – not only at Continental. The ContiSportAttack 3 also uses this trick to combine durability and cornering grip in the best possible way.

In order to achieve better behavior on wet roads, Continental said goodbye to the so-called ContiSportAttack 3 “Conti hook” in profile design and now uses more conventional elements. “If we want to improve the wet grip, we have to divert the water somehow, and this is simply better with this very open profile design”, explains research director Edwin Goudswaaard this obvious change. Only in a narrow area in the middle of the rear running surface does the ContiSportAttack 3 dispense with any profiling. This is possible because the front tire can dry the lane well on wet roads.

Broad, easily perceptible border area

Another important factor for the engineers when developing the ContiSportAttack 3 was a broad, easily perceptible limit area. “Technically it would be possible for us to achieve a completely unexcited rolling behavior up to just before the physical limit. However, we are of the opinion that the driver should find out in good time when he is approaching the tire’s limit.”

Well over 100 prototypes with different carcasses, compounds and profiles have been tested for the development of the ContiSportAttack 3 on the ContiDrom, the test track in Uvalde, Texas and the Bilster Berg and Assen race tracks.

The Conti engineers successfully managed the balancing act between sufficient self-damping for washed-out mountain roads and the best possible stability for racetrack operations: On the country road trial lap through Styria and Kartnen as well as during fast turns on the Red Bull Ring, the ContiSportAttack 3 was not sustainable Nakedness. With cloudy skies and moderate outside temperatures, the sports tire on Aprilia RSV4 and Tuono V4, BMW S 1000 RR, Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R, Suzuki GSX-R 1000 and Yamaha YZF-R1 did respectably until the end of the 3-hour session.

You can already look forward to next year’s tire comparison tests. In any case, the ContiSportAttack 3 is a serious challenger among sports tires. Half the year up to the market launch in early 2016 will be spent at Continental getting approvals for as many motorcycles as possible.
