Content of

With the R1, RSV4 RR, S 1000 RR, 1299 Panigale and H2, five new supersport motorcycles will be launched in 2015. Who would have predicted that a few years ago? PS makes a first comparison of technology.

Michael Pfeiffer

The dead live longer. Long live the super sports class! Gone are the agony that befell us a few years ago when we weren’t allowed to experience a new Yamaha YZF-R1, a new Suzuki GSX-R 1000 or a new Honda Fireblade. Last autumn we enjoyed the two major international trade fairs INTERMOT and EICMA again. First, BMW came up with the completely redesigned S 1000 RR. Then Ducati with the insane 1299 Panigale! Kawasaki brought the charged Ninja H2. And finally the completely redeveloped Yamaha YZF-R1 and the extensively revised Aprilia RSV4 RR followed.

In the hustle and bustle, it was almost forgotten that Honda presented a genuine MotoGP replica with street legal approval, the RC 213 V-S. However, their data situation is still so mysterious that PS cannot include them in the first technology comparison here. Just this much: The V4 engine should deliver well over 200 hp and turn very high. Higher than all other 1000s. Since the machine will only be built to order and will cost more than 100,000 euros, we’re giving it to us this time. Sorry To do this, we are pushing the five other innovations, or in this issue of PS in the cylinders. Because here we want to compare the technology that the five manufacturers use to move up to the 200 hp class. Yes, that’s right: the factory specifications are 200 hp or even more. However, it remains a mystery why BMW convulsively gives 199 hp, but easily screams 206 hp on the test bench.

Complete performance treatment for Aprilia RSV4 RR

But let’s start with A for Aprilia. The RSV4, which is wonderfully easy to drive, has been significantly increased in performance for the 2015 model year, in the classic tuning manner. The unique and very compact 65-degree V4 also received new cylinder heads. With new channel shapes, sharper camshaft timing and higher compression, 16 hp was gained. Aprilia now indicates 201 hp at 13,000 rpm, i.e. a nominal speed increased by 500 revolutions. The combustion chambers have been finely machined and the valves are made entirely of titanium. The connecting rods, which now come from the premium manufacturer Pankl, have been lightened. Aprilia also saved weight on the crankshaft, and the crank pins were even made smaller. True to the motto: the lighter, the less stress. Variable intake manifolds work in the newly tuned air filter box, and the exhaust system of the Aprilia RSV4 RR has also been revised – a complete performance upgrade.

BMW S 1000 RR with more torque and top performance

About the engine of the BMW S 1000 RR can be written a lot. It is simply the most powerful supersport engine currently approved for road use. At least as long as we haven’t measured the four new competitors. Probably in anticipation of these new opponents, BMW started a small performance cure, which not only increased the torque over almost the entire speed range, but also the top performance. New channel shapes, improved timing of the titanium valves and a lot of fine work in the intake and exhaust tract made this step forward possible. The basic design of the in-line engine with a very short stroke, large pistons and the tiny but speed-resistant rocker arms in the cylinder head was retained. Yamaha took over a lot with the R1, but more of that later.

Ducati 1299 Panigale with the most powerful V2 engine

Now it’s about Ducati. About the sensational, because it is the most powerful V2 engine that has ever been installed in a motorcycle. The 90-degree V2 built into the Panigale should produce an incredible 205 hp at 10,500 rpm. World record! And on top of that, gigantic 116 millimeter thick pistons whiz up and down in the cylinders. Another world record for a high-performance engine. In addition, there is the unique desmodromic valve control from Ducati, through which the valves are not pressed onto the cam tracks with springs, but with closing levers. So save yourself Ducati a lot of friction in the heads because you don’t have to work against springs, but only against the inertia of the valve. In this way, Ducati realizes very high valve lifts and thus a lot of space for fresh gas flowing in. Also the Ducati 1299 Panigale carries titanium valves, which of course have to be huge for a V2.

Kawasaki Ninja H2 with an elaborate supercharger engine

Kawasaki doesn’t have this problem. On the one hand, the H2 engine is a classic inline four-cylinder with correspondingly small combustion chambers. Second, Kawasaki just blows the 1000 up. In other words, a mechanically driven turbocharger pushes the air into the combustion chambers, which benefits the filling and thus the performance. In addition, the torque can be increased almost infinitely over the entire speed range, depending on what the motor can handle mechanically and thermally. So it will be interesting to see what the Kawasaki Ninja H2 then presses on the test bench. The 200 hp that Kawasaki specifies are, of course, only the basis for roadworthiness, and they already come up at 11,000 rpm. 300 PS shouldn’t be a problem, the open Kawasaki Ninja H2R has already been priced in that way.

How complex a supercharger motor ultimately is is briefly indicated here. On the one hand, of course, the loader has to be driven, which Kawasaki does with a chain and a planetary gear. On the other hand, the entire intake tract after the charger must be able to withstand the overpressure and be designed accordingly. The air routing to the loader is also not that easy. At the Kawasaki Ninja H2 he sits behind the cylinder bank, so the air has to come in from the front.

A turbocharged engine is never thermally easy, which is why the compression is reduced first. The high charge with up to two bar works like a higher compression, which is why the tendency to ring increases. Kawasaki goes down to 8.5: 1, while a naturally aspirated 1000 engine like the one in the ZX-10R has a compression ratio of 13: 1. In order to take account of the high torques, pistons – here cast pistons – connecting rods, crankshafts and gears have to be designed to be correspondingly heavier. With the Kawasaki Ninja H2 you can also see that the engine housing has been dimensioned to be much more stable. Technically, the Kawa is out of the ordinary. Of course, it can also only be used in hobby classes in racing, because there are no championships for supercharger engines. But it will score with superior performance.

Yamaha YZF-R1 engine has everything that is good and expensive

The new Yamaha R1 is clearly aimed at motorsport. Finally, finally, Yamaha is showing its teeth again and biting the competition in … where? Let’s see. In any case, experiments were largely dispensed with with the engine. In return, it offers everything that is good and expensive. The in-line four-cylinder, whose crankshaft carries the crank pin offset in the typical Yamaha crossplane arrangement, has an output of 200 hp. A good 200 hp, as the Yamaha people behind closed doors already put us. The crankshaft does not turn as it does on the M1 by Rossi, Lorenzo & Co. backwards, but conventionally. There are no miracle parts in the cylinder head, but similar rocker arms under the cams as in BMW. Thick inlet ducts and exhaust manifolds are evidence of good gas throughput.

The secret of the Yamaha YZF-R1 lies in the materials used. Titanium valves and even titanium connecting rods are installed here as standard, an expensive affair. But also an effective one, because the lightweight components provide speed stability. And that demands the desired level of performance, which starts at 200 hp. More to follow! Incidentally, the connecting rods are the first broken titanium connecting rods in series. The connecting rod feet are not sawed through after forging to get the two bearing halves, but broken. Each connecting rod receives its own personal bearing half, they fit together exactly. The mighty front silencer of the Yamaha R1 should also be mentioned, which, together with the rear silencer, is supposed to provide a lot of pressure.

Who will be the 2015 winner in the super sports segment? The Yamaha YZF-R1 looks strong and will be on par with the BMW S 1000 RR. Ducati is always good for a surprise, and the Kawasaki Ninja H2 outsmarts everyone with the charger. But maybe the Aprilia RSV4 RR will do it again on the race. Their chassis has been sensationally balanced so far. And that’s what the Follow two of our technology comparison the new super sports car in the next issue of PS (02/2015).

Performance curves from factory specifications

New Supersport Motorcycles 2015 Technology Comparison - Part 1

PS

Just a first impression of the performance curves, constructed from the factory specifications: Aprilia, BMW and Yamaha will not give each other much. The supercharged engine of the Kawasaki Ninja H2 will shine with a rich torque curve. The Ducati torrent towers above all others.

Just a first impression from the factory specifications, so far only the new BMW S 1000 RR has been measured: The three free-sucking thousands from Aprilia, BMW and Yamaha will not give each other much. The supercharged engine of the Kawasaki Ninja H2 will shine with a rich torque curve and still turn up to 14000 rpm. Above all the others, the Ducati is dominated by the surge of torque, which however runs out of air at 11,000 rpm and is electronically limited.

(BMW performance on the crankshaft, measurements on Dynojet roller test bench 250, other performance curves constructed from factory specifications.)
