We tested nine different multifunctional oils. Multifunctional oil – that sounds like: “Can do everything a little, but nothing really well.” But precisely this “everything a little bit” ensures that one of the products tested here definitely belongs in every household. But take a look for yourself: The products that have been tested follow.

Ballistol Universal Oil: The ancient recipe (since 1904!) Still has many fans. Rightly so, because in addition to solid performance, perfect health and environmental compatibility are good reasons to buy. But there is a small weakness: completely new paint may not like the classic at all.

And this is how MOTORRAD tested: The laboratory tests were carried out together with the cleaning experts from Karcher in Winnenden (rust dissolving ability, creeping ability, water displacement, plastic compatibility) and the Dr. Wack in Ingolstadt (wear protection, corrosion protection, paint compatibility). Shown here: steel plates in a salt bath during the corrosion protection test.

Car 1 multifunctional spray: The comparatively low price is tempting, and it is always good for standard tasks such as making stubborn connections. On the other hand, there are weaknesses in wear and corrosion protection as well as in terms of plastic compatibility.

15/22
Caramba 70 Multi-Oil: In the pre-WD-40 era, Caramba was almost synonymous with multifunctional spray and can still keep up today. Except for very slight weaknesses in terms of plastic compatibility, there’s hardly anything to complain about, and the price is also okay.

16/22
Germes Aktiv Lubrication 125: The corrosion protection is below average, and the plastic compatibility should also be a little better. Otherwise, the product, which is in the middle of the range in terms of price, does a decent job and is not too far removed from “good” in terms of points.

17/22
Liqui Moly Multi Spray Plus 7: It pays to collect points diligently: The Ulm lubricant experts do not allow themselves a real weakness in any category, they even set the best value for rust dissolving power and leave paint and plastic untouched. That’s enough for the test win.

18/22
Lubegard Lube’n Loosen: At this price you can almost expect a “miracle cure”. And at least in one category (wear protection), the US product delivers a top value and is also good at rust-releasing properties. Miracle cure? Not really, but a good, expensive spray oil.

19/22
Nigrin Multi Oil Hybrid: The performance in the corrosion protection test is refusal to work. What a lot of points costs. It’s a shame, because otherwise the product, equipped with a very user-friendly spray head, shows consistently attractive performance and does not attack paint or plastic.

20/22
Sonax SX90 Plus: Above average for wear protection, full marks for corrosion protection and material compatibility – the product lives up to the good company name. There are no extra points for the clever spray head, but that’s enough for the podium.

Nine multifunctional oils in the test

21/22
WD-40 multifunctional product: The USA swear by the WD-40, and the American product also had a brilliant career in old Europe. The high-flyer test, however, is still lacking more plastic compatibility. As a consolation there are, among other things. full points for corrosion protection. And a good third place.

Nine multifunctional oils in the test

No product achieved the test rating “very good” – which is hardly surprising, because the “egg-laying woolly milk sow”, which can do everything equally well, must remain a pipe dream with such different test requirements. The bottom line is that all products deliver a solid performance and are not too far apart in terms of points. The fairly homogeneous overall result should not hide the fact that the individual products have different strengths and weaknesses. A more detailed study of the points table is therefore worthwhile.

Please don’t expect miracles. The name already suggests: Multifunctional oil – that sounds like: “Can do everything a little, but nothing really well.” But precisely this “everything a little” ensures that one of the products tested here definitely belongs in every household. Because when it comes to getting a hooking lock open, immobilizing a creaking joint or removing nasty tar and chain spray residues, the chemical all-something-experts are indispensable if you don’t necessarily have to deal with the domestic garage shelf with umpteen chemicals. Would like to fill specialists.

Lubrication and rust control are the classic main tasks of multifunctional oils. A product that is halfway suitable for this can be produced relatively unspectacularly and cheaply: Take some unalloyed oil, mix it with “adhesive additives”, add propellant to the can – and the arbor is ready. But it is also more complex, starting with the selection of raw materials, continuing with a sophisticated recipe that also takes the aspects of corrosion and wear protection into account. Such a procedure not only makes things more expensive, it can also make things more complicated – keyword “target conflict” – because turning one end of the recipe screw usually affects the other end.

Plastic parts in particular can be attacked

And not necessarily positive. This can then affect the material compatibility, for example. Plastic parts in particular can be attacked if they come into contact with one or the other agent for too long. Whereby “too long” can mean “a few hours”. In case of doubt, it is better to ensure from the outset that the product really only gets to where it is supposed to work and that excess is removed immediately. A closer study of the products in this story is also worthwhile.

There, one or the other reader may miss points made about the price-performance ratio. Simple explanation: Hardly any other chemical helper has as wide a price range as multifunctional oils. Even at one hardware store down, the same product is sometimes available for half of the price. Multifunctional oils are “fast movers” in the trade, and the promotional prices are correspondingly high.

This is how MOTORRAD tests

Nine multifunctional oils in the test

mps photo studio

Dr. Wack application technology manager Hartmut Hauber at the XCT test bench.

MOTORRAD bought the test samples in November 2015 in the automotive accessories trade and in hardware stores in the greater Stuttgart area. The laboratory tests were carried out by MOTORRAD together with the cleaning experts from Karcher in Winnenden (rust dissolving ability, creeping ability, water displacement, plastic compatibility) and Dr. Wack in Ingolstadt (wear protection, corrosion protection, paint compatibility). For the rust dissolution test, metal sheets that had been pretreated with five percent salt solution and rusted for twelve hours were sprayed with the multifunctional oils (five minutes exposure time).

This was followed by 24 runs each in the Karcher wipe test machine. For the creeping ability test (“spreading effect”), 100 microliters of the test products were applied to rusted steel sheet with a pipette and measured after a contact time of five minutes. Also 100 microliters of the respective test sample had to prove what they can do in terms of water displacement on a sheet wetted with colored water. Pre-tensioned ABS plastic strips came into test sample contact for five hours so that statements about plastic compatibility were possible. For 24 hours, new refinish paint applied to glass strips had to do with the multifunctional oils in the paint compatibility test. For degreased steel plates that had been sprayed in full with the test samples, they were put in a salt solution bath for 24 hours.

After that, statements about corrosion protection were possible. On an XCT test stand (“cross cylinder tester”), a test ring wetted with the test samples was loaded with 400 N by a test cylinder for 30 seconds at a constant 960 rpm. The measurement of the cylinder wear surface allowed statements to be made about wear protection. Finally, the labels and the contents were checked. You can see the exact process in the picture gallery, where we show the individual tests that the tested multifunctional oils had to pass.
