On the model of Velib ‘for the bicycle or Autolib’ for the car, the French company Cityscoot is preparing its arrival on the self-service scooter market in Paris. But with a major innovation: the electric scooter can be borrowed and left anywhere before and after its use in "free-floating" (full self-service).

Free-floating, full self-service

"The particularity of the Cityscoot system lies in the fact that it is not necessary to collect or return the scooter at a station. This is a sharing system which offers the subscriber the possibility of completing his location at the exact place he wants, whether in front of his home, at his office, in front of the shop where he goes ", summarizes the National Association for the Development of Electric Mobility (AVERE).

The Cityscoot service subscriber can therefore leave his scooter wherever he sees fit (in intramural Paris) and the next subscriber can borrow it in the same way after having located it "within 2 meters" using his smartphone (or on) which provides him with a user code.

The code unlocks the trunk containing the helmet (adjustable from S to XL) and its hygienic charlottes as well as the vehicle papers, which must be stored under the saddle after use for the rental to be considered over.

It remains to be seen whether Parisians (who degrade nearly 9000 Velib ‘per year …) will be able to manage this freedom with courtesy, without leaving "their" scooter completely discharged after use..

Cityscoot has planned to limit the risks by financially encouraging subscribers to recharge "their" vehicle after use, by plugging it into a socket available in Autolib ‘stations or Vinci car parks: € 2 per quarter of an hour for a drop-off with recharging against 3 € for a "free" deposit.

The Paris city hall had already announced its interest in self-service scooters (read), but Cityscoot is a 100% private operation initiated by Bertrand Fleurose, manager of the multi-brand scooter service center and the Scootup rental agency based in the 17th arrondissement of the capital, in partnership with Vinci.

According to the, Cityscoot plans to roll out its first 35 electric scooters as early as June (German-supplied 50cc equivalents, which do not exceed 50 km / h and have a range of around 70 km). The goal is to reach a fleet of 1000 electric scooters in the summer of 2016 and 2000 a year later (by way of comparison, Paris has around 25,000 Velib ‘and nearly 3,000 Autolib’).
