A bike for the heart

In 2008 Moto Guzzi launched the successor to the legendary V7. The bestseller has now been spruced up for this model year. Mandello is proud of the Moto Guzzi V7. Rightly?

The anticipation was great, as was the expectation regarding the update of the M.oto Guzzi V7 for the 2014 model year. Have you finally given it an ABS? It would look excellent on her. Because the brand’s bestseller, of which around 3,250 pieces rolled off the production line last year, has been an insider tip among beginners and re-entrants since the introduction of the tier driving license. Visually, it presents itself as a real treat. This time too, Guzzi immediately provides the proof. The 750 cubic V2 moped will be presented to the trade press in all three model variants on pedestals in the middle of the Italian plant in Mandello.

A bike for the heart

V7 conveys a calmness that soothes the mind, so that one simply feels like a better person at her side. Fortunately, that doesn’t distinguish the old model from the new one.

The engine runs smoothly from 2000 tours

However, you have to search hard to even notice the innovations. The Stone, which costs 7735 euros, for example, was given a black finish. Mirrors, side covers, shock absorbers, fenders, handlebars: they are now black as night. The 1800 Euro more expensive Racer received new lettering, black anodized aluminum parts and a visually modified seat. The look of the special, which is available from dealers for 8,435 euros, was not changed at all. What sounds like a minimal facelift remains one. Because you still miss an ABS on the Brembo brake system. Only one small thing has changed technically: The alternator now has an aluminum cover and now runs in an oil bath. In everyday use of the Moto Guzzi V7 you don’t have to expect any changes. But the weather shows its sunny, spring-like side this morning, and who can say no when 20 Mandello Twins are enjoying themselves to warm up? So up on the saddle of the moped weighing around 198 kilograms, including 21 liters of gasoline.

It is always wonderful to sit back on a Guzzi after a long period of abstinence and to give the 90-degree V2 a fat thrust while standing. This shaking of the bike from left to right and back is what makes the Moto Guzzi V7 so fascinating. The small-block twin hangs fine on the gas, the engine runs smoothly from 2000 tours. Below that – at least when coasting – you have to do with annoying constant travel jerks. But whatever? The Guzzi-V2 is just not a Japanese four-cylinder. And that’s good. Because when the gas is pulled up, the unit, which has a maximum output of 48 hp, gasps for air with a wonderfully throaty voice, only to push it out of the two chrome-plated rear silencers with a massaging V2 staccato, bassy and bubbling. A 750 can sound so mature without messing around with the neighborhood.

In terms of driving, the Moto Guzzi V7 shows itself from an unspectacular side

The spring elements of all three model variants iron out unevenness perfectly, spoil your rider with great responsiveness and sufficient cushioning. In combination with the narrow tires (a 100 mm in the front, a 130 mm in the rear), you can circle corners of all kinds with amazing stability. The wheelbase of 1449 millimeters, the moderate steering head angle of 62.5 degrees with a caster of 109 millimeters do it for you The rest. In other words: Especially the racer, gleaming with chrome, turns into a sedate mass with its narrow handlebars that is reluctant to allow spontaneous course adjustments. The handling characteristics of the Moto Guzzi V7 should therefore be comprehensively optimized with the next update, because the other two variants with their upright seating position and significantly wider handlebars also lose a bit of their lightness from speeds above 60 km / h.

Otherwise, the Moto Guzzi V7 offers exactly what the modern driver’s heart demands: a charismatic drive that is always motivated to get down to business from the standstill up to around 6500 tours, a bewitching sound that makes the neck hairs stand up with goose bumps, and a magnificent appearance that could make your partner jealous. At the end of the test drive, this Guzzi leaves you confused. Because even if it has not been seriously updated, this motorcycle always manages to drive itself into the heart of its pilot. And that she’s been doing this for seven years in a row, the Italians can really be proud.
