The space available on the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer is much more generous. The tightly padded seat of the pilot offers 20 mm more width and length, the pillion even enjoys a 5 cm longer seat cushion. The seat height has increased significantly to 845 mm (MT-09: 815 mm). And by repositioning a plastic part, it can be increased to 860 mm in just a few simple steps. Even long-legged people have no problems with folded knees. If you like it lower, Yamaha offers the option of lowering the seat height to 815 mm with a different seat and lever. The butted aluminum handlebar is easy to hand. You stay upright and relax. Made to endure in the saddle all day.

At the push of a button, the triplet starts with the familiar, well-muffled triple growl. And as you know it from him, he is there from idle. Purrs good at little more than idle speed through small places, puts on your ears at the exit of the town to push forward smoothly. In the lower engine speed regions, the three-cylinder doesn’t seem quite as lively as in the MT-09, but more even and linear in its development. Doesn’t come across as extroverted as in the MT-09, but more evenly according to its broader purpose. This impression could also have something to do with the fact that the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer should weigh around 210 kilograms with a full tank. Still an excellent value for a full-blown 900 with fairing. Especially in view of the very healthy 115 HP, which results in a magnificent power-to-weight ratio of 0.55 HP / kg for this species.

In this respect, Yamaha proudly announces, the MT-09 Tracer even ranks ahead of competitors such as the Kawasaki Versys 1000, KTM Adventure 1050, Ducati Hyperstrada or Triumph Tiger 800 and 1050. That may be true, but it is around 20 kilos more than at the MT-09.

More confident and grown up, better balanced

Useful and pleasant things such as the main stand, hand protectors, cladding with two LED headlights, the more stable, longer rear frame as well as the lush bench and with 18 liters four liters more tank volume now appear on the scales. The MT-09’s maneuverability, which can sometimes seem overly motivated, is therefore not part of the Tracer. The spring elements have been provided with harder springs and tighter damping for use in the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer. As a result, the rear is slightly higher, which in turn makes the chassis geometry with a 66 degree steering head angle and 100 mm caster (MT-09: 65 degrees, 103 mm) slightly more easy to handle. The chassis swallows long bumps perfectly, but it rumbles surprisingly carelessly over short, hard edges and wrinkled, furrowed asphalt, which affects the suspension comfort on bumpy roads a little.

As usual, the radially mounted four-piston brake calipers in the front wheel act confidently. Not overly snappy, easy to dose and supported by a newly tuned, somewhat roughly regulating ABS. It allows for decent deceleration, but cannot completely prevent stoppies every now and then on downhill slopes. Which doesn’t really detract from the first appearance of the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer as a dynamic and entertaining companion.

Versatility is the keyword behind the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer. And this not only includes the seat height adjustment described. The pannier holder and main stand are standard on board. The handlebars can be moved forward 10 mm by turning the handlebar brackets. They also already have threads for mounting accessories. The windshield protects the upper body well, albeit not free from turbulence, and can be adjusted in three steps by 30 mm without tools. Headlights can also be adjusted without tools. The standard equipment also includes hand protectors and a 12 V socket. The display, which can be operated from the handlebar, is also prepared for the installation of heated grips.

At the end of the test day, nothing pinches, the butt does not pinch. And assuming a similarly low consumption as with the MT-09, thanks to the 18-liter tank, stages of a good 380 kilometers should be possible. Tour fans can already look forward to it. So all in all, excellent starting conditions for the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer. Especially since the fun will be available for an appetizing price of 9595 euros. This is also a tradition in the MT family.
