Races - Report and results of the Catalan GP MotoGP 2017 -

It’s historic: Ducati records two consecutive victories in MotoGP for the first time since 2010 thanks to the new demonstration of strength and mastery of Andrea Dovizioso, who wins – in the dry – the 2017 Catalan Grand Prix ahead of the Honda de Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa and the Ducati of Jorge Lorenzo. Despite Zarco’s 5th place, Yamaha is on the other hand gray with the distant 8th and 10th positions of Rossi and Viñales…

"It was a strange race, a strange weekend", analyzes Andrea Dovizioso at the finish of the 2017 Catalan Grand Prix, as if surprised to finish again on the top step of the podium in Barcelona, after his brilliant victory in Italy.

Happy as ever, "DesmoDovi" signs his second successive success a week apart, which had never happened to him in MotoGP. The satisfaction is all the greater as it precedes two darlings of the Catalan public: Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa, relegated to respectively 3.5 and 6.8 sec.

Happiness that never comes alone for Ducati, Jorge Lorenzo – a time leader and then the author of a superb comeback at the end of the race – places the second official GP17 in 4th place, 9.6 seconds behind his teammate, who is the Mallorcan. sportingly came to applaud during the awards ceremony. Since the departure of Casey Stoner, Ducati has never recorded a double: the last one dates back to 2010. This shows the extent of Dovizioso’s performance. !

Having taken the lead 9 laps from the finish after having taken Dani Pedrosa’s measure, "Dovi" set a fast and steady pace until the finish. The Italian was never caught at the head of the race, despite Marc Marquez attempting to come back in the last laps: "I attacked all weekend, I gave myself 100%, but Dovi was too fast ", admits the defending champion.

"My objective was above all to finish in front of Dani … without starting to make a mistake", continues the n ° 93 who has fallen no less than five times this weekend at Montmelo in addition to having tripped in the stand crutch of his Honda during a motorcycle change test! Aware of having pushed the limits too often this weekend, Marquez will even go so far as to amuse the gallery by pretending to fall when arriving on the podium. !

Marquez was able to avoid the fall of too much

Joking aside, Marc Marquez was hot because Danilo Petrucci – for the first time on the first row – badly jostled him when the lights went out by going completely across, failing to knock them both down from the first meters! His teammate Dani Pedrosa, qualified on pole, also points to the difficulties of staying on his wheels on the aging and bumpy asphalt of the Catalan circuit, source of a lot of hassle when choosing his tires.

"The tires suffered a lot, I did not feel the grip and I tried to keep my rhythm while preserving my tires", explains the n ° 26 who ensures that his front tire no longer had any grip at the end..

"In the last laps, the tire was completely rinsed," approved the winner Andrea Dovizioso, who started on hard tires at the front and rear. "I’m super happy because we worked on the little details and it paid off," adds "Dovi", referring to the private tests recently carried out by Ducati at Montmelo. Tests probably paid off for the Italian brand, which seems to have found solutions to its unwanted wheeling concerns encountered following the abandonment of the fins. Even Casey Stoner goes with her compliment to Dovi !

Yamaha Factory in distress…

Yamaha, on the other hand, has never succeeded in dealing with this tire problem: Rossi like Viñales and Zarco complained all weekend about the instability of the front axle and above all about a serious lack of traction at the rear. "The Yamaha has never presented such behavior", annoys Maverick Viñales, while his teammate even considers the 2017 model "less good" than the M1 2016 when the grip conditions are bad.

The result of this GP of Catalonia seems to prove the Doctor right: Johann Zarco and Jonas Folger – respectively 5th and 6th – on their private M1 Tech3 finish far ahead of Rossi and Viñales on their official Yamaha. The Italian and the Spanish, visibly lacking in feeling when entering a curve and unable to put full throttle on the exit, finished distant 8th and 10th positions at 20.821 and 24.189 sec respectively..

Enough to provoke a great anger of "Mack", who stopped in his lap of honor to examine his rear tire in order to make the public understand the source of his problems … Michelin will appreciate this not really elegant gesture, even if the frustration is necessarily very great for Viñales who has long remained in the wheel of the Ducati of Loris Baz, finally 12th after being overtaken by the Spaniard and then Crutchlow.

Sylvain Guintoli finished his last freelance on Suzuki in 17th position 44.6 sec from the winner … but only 1.4 sec from his experienced teammate, Andrea Iannone! The French rider will have to return the handlebars of the GSX-RR – with regret! – to Alex Rins, who is due to return to racing in Assen (The Netherlands) on June 25, after a well-deserved week’s break for all the drivers … and observers! "Guinto" will have participated in three races with Suzuki (France, Italy and Catalonia), without falling and progressing each time: bravo to him !

The Frenchman, much appreciated for his comments, will also do the post-race tests in Barcelona: a nice reward for the No. 50 who admits to having feared being "much more dropped" for his return to the premier class. A little positive for Suzuki, whose star driver Andrea Iannone has been in the cellar since the start of the season, to the point of whispering here and there that the tempestuous Italian could be unloaded from the team at the end of the season…

The results of the championship

With only six points collected in Barcelona, Maverick Viñales sees his lead in the provisional standings melt like snow in the sun: the Spanish prodigy is only seven steps ahead of Andrea Dovizioso, who consolidates his second place in the championship with his second victory successive. Ducati hoped to play for the title this year by hiring Lorenzo: what if that ambition finally takes shape with his discreet – but very talented – teammate "DesmoDovi" ?

After seven contested races – out of 18 planned – Marc Marquez returns to third place with 23 points behind Viñales: "the objective was to reduce the gap below the value of a victory (25 points, Editor’s note)", note Marc Marquez, all the more satisfied with his weekend as his little brother, Alex, brilliantly won in Moto2.

Dani Pedrosa comes down to fourth place in the provisional 27 points behind the leader, after occupying second place after the French GP. The Spaniard precedes Valentino Rossi (+ 28 points), Johann Zarco (+ 36) and Jorge Lorenzo, back to 7th rank at 52 lengths on his Ducati. Loris Baz is in 14th place in the provisional ranking.

In the constructor standings, Yamaha keeps the orders with 139 points against 125 for Honda, closely followed by Ducati (122 points) thanks to the brilliant doubling of Dovizioso. Suzuki is in 4th place with … 28 points. That is 111 points less than Yamaha! Aprilia and KTM bring up the rear with 19 and 8 points respectively, the Orange brand having to contend in Catalonia with the forfeit of Bradley Smith’s hand injury.
