Offspring up on motorcycles

“Practice early…”, applies more than ever in motorsport. But nowhere else is it more important to start right – so as not to put money and health at risk unnecessarily.

For Markus Schmitt, sweat is pouring out in rivers. This is usually how it is for him when he is on the grounds of the Motocross Club in Frankenthal. But on this midsummer morning he doesn’t sit in the saddle of his own cross machine, but runs alongside nine-year-old Oskar as a trainer at the MX Academy. Markus Schmitt is a youth trainer at the AMC Frankenthal, one of the bases of the MX Academy with which the ADAC brings the youngsters onto motorcycles, and Oskar is someone who might want to become a real racing driver.

At seven locations across Germany, boys and girls like Oskar between the ages of seven and twelve can try out how motocross really works and whether this sport could be fun for them. And it will start again soon, from February 16, interested parties can register online (www.adac-motorsport.de) and test motocross for a day. The complete rider’s equipment and the motorcycle are available for 38 euros with the professional instructions. For that reason alone, you have to hurry, the courses are booked out very quickly.

Breathe, wipe off sweat, give tips

Oskar is still a bit tense on his KTM 65 SX during these first few laps. The absolute beginner has a hell of a respect for the crosser, but he knows that Markus Schmitt will take good care of him. The trainer is connected to the motorcycle by cable and can turn off the engine immediately in an emergency.

Between breathing and wiping off sweat, the trainer gives valuable tips, and the young racer is soon sitting much more relaxed in the saddle, skilfully exposing his elbows and turning the throttle much more decisively. Schmitt has to run even faster now. “When we see the enthusiasm,” the coach says later, “you really enjoy doing it. The boys and girls experience something very special, they are really attentive and learn very quickly. ”Schmitt and Karsten Bihrer, the second trainer this Sunday, find the right tone for the children. They have a lot of fun, but they also listen carefully to the coaches and try to put what they hear into practice immediately.

MX Academy is aimed exclusively at newbies

Bennet, who was already out and about in Papa’s garden with a small PW50, will soon be able to switch from the automatic to a KTM with manual transmission. Children with their first real motocross experience are out of place here. The MX Academy is aimed exclusively at newbies.

The trainers have a well-trained eye and observe during the first warm-up exercises in full motocross gear, even without a bike, who has a real talent for movement. Then they continue on BMX bikes before the kids are instructed in the secrets of the motocross motorcycle.

Then it can start, the supervisors run in countless laps with the children “on a leash” around the pylons, which mark something like a track in the flat part of the motocross area. Before that, the car brakes, stops, starts, turns the lap to the left and then to the right.

Lease a cross motorcycle for almost 1000 euros a year

Meanwhile, the parents stand in the shadow of the clubhouse and watch with interest how their offspring are getting better and better. When the cables finally come off the handlebars and all participants in the training are allowed to do their laps independently, the fathers and mothers are proud of their youngsters. And the enthusiasm of the kids can also be seen in their excited conversations. It is hard to believe now that they hardly knew each other or did not know each other at all. They talk about their laps with plenty of gestures, and everyone agrees that motocross is very “cool”.

“The program got off to a great start,” explains Helmut Alexander, ADAC motorcycle consultant in the Palatinate ADAC Association, the responsible official and himself a successful motocrosser. Under the leadership of former World Cup stars Didi Lacher and Bernd Eckenbach and with the support of KTM, Motul, Ortema and Pirelli, this excellently organized youth work is going into its third year in 2015. The most important goal is to teach the children how to enjoy sport, to teach them how to use the motorcycle responsibly and of course to initially keep the costs as low as possible for the parents. “Most of the participating children actually stay,” says Alexander, explaining the success, especially in Frankenthal. “You can then lease such a cross motorcycle for a full year for just under 1000 euros and train with it practically all the time here on the site.”

When driving freely, ambition awakens – in the parents

In the meantime, the team of young crossers has mastered the handling of the machine and the corresponding posture so well that Bihrer and Schmitt and their proteges are now switching to part of the official AMC Frankenthal racetrack. There are now a lot of hills in front of the racers, two 180-degree bends and a straight, very sandy piece, now they are supposed to go around the course completely on their own. The trainers explain once again what is important when driving. Then they stand on a hill to the side, give the start signal and watch the hustle and bustle that now sets in.

The parents have also stopped talking. The dads are looking for the best place to be able to follow their offspring as closely as possible, and soon one or the other will raise their fists when the “Klene” overtakes his buddy on the outside. Helmut Alexander is visibly amused by that. If Filius does his best, he’ll give a funny saying for dad or mom.

Weary but happy

They don’t worry too much if one or the other kisses the floor every now and then. A trainer is always on hand immediately and the children are so committed that they can continue immediately after dusting off the dust and starting the bike again.

In the afternoon everyone is exhausted – but happy. Oskar and his buddy Ian immediately put their heads together after handing over their clothes with the certificate under their arms: “If you and I wish that together for Christmas and our birthdays, then we could get such a motorcycle together.” The fathers throw each other uncertain looks. Perhaps the beginning of a great racing career…
