Ralf Petersen offers his knowledge not only through the VHS Duisburg. In his book “Motorrad-Technik. Practical basic knowledge easy to understand ”(series“ This is how it’s done ”, Delius Klasing Verlag, Bielefeld; € 19.90) he sums up his many years of knowledge.

Don’t be afraid!

Quite a few motorcyclists give up quickly to repairs or even simple maintenance work. Ralf Petersen’s mechanics courses help to get to know your own machine better and not to be “fair game for the workshops”.

Helping people to help themselves – under this motto, Ralf Petersen has been offering various seminars on motorcycle technology at the adult education centers in Duisburg and Waltrop since 1994. They are aimed particularly at beginners and motorcyclists with little technical experience. Just like the inspection workshop today: oil change, brake pad change, checking spark plugs and valve clearance, etc. Everything on Ralf’s own Honda NTV 650. For reasons of liability, he is not allowed to service other people’s motorcycles in this training. Nevertheless, a maximum of ten participants should come with their own machines in order to be able to make direct comparisons.

“You learn most by watching and trying it out yourself,” Ralf is sure as a trained teacher. His learning goal for the ten motorcyclists who have traveled up to 250 kilometers today? “You don’t have to be able to do everything yourself afterwards. But you should trust yourself to do simple work and understand what the workshop does. In order to better control them. ”With inspection prices of 400 to 1000 euros, which the course participants report on in the introductory session, this is a noble goal.

Make a note of the mileage to the nearest 100 meters

Theory comes before technology. For example, what literature you need to have for home maintenance. Workshop manuals from the manufacturer (“they have their own spare part number”) or repair instructions from relevant publishers for individual models. With a little knowledge, you can do a lot yourself, especially when the guarantee has expired. A tip: before an inspection at the dealer, make a note of the mileage to the nearest 100 meters. “Then you will know afterwards how long the test drive was.”

Visual checks on brake pads or spark plugs, adjusting the play on the clutch and throttle cables are no magic. The practical part quickly shows this. “The workshop doesn’t do it any differently,” says Ralf, “check and just adjust if necessary”. For frequent drivers, Ralf recommends maintenance intervals of 10,000 (“the service specifications of many manufacturers are from the 1970s”) or one inspection per year. There are small and large inspections, depending on the mileage. Ralf recommends spreading the big home inspection over two days. Then you can separate work on the warm engine (oil change, carburetor setting) from those for which it has to be cold without time pressure (set valve clearance up to a maximum of 35 ° Celsius!). The engine should be 80 to 90 ° Celsius hot for the oil change. Then the oil flows better and keeps particles in suspension that would otherwise settle. Tip: “Put on work gloves and sift through the used oil for chips.”

Change the brake pads and brake fluid

It continues step by step through the assemblies: Ralf shows how to dismantle floating caliper brakes, make the pistons move with a brake cleaner and push them back with a screw clamp, how copper paste (“only on the back, please!”) Prevents the squeaking of brake pads.

The brake fluid is then changed every two years. “If the opening to the brake line in the master brake cylinder is always covered with fresh brake fluid, you can gradually drain the old one at the bottom without having to bleed.” Self-bleeding Stahlbus valves make work easier. Then there is the trick of a block of wood that is as wide as the brake disc …

The spark plugs may only be removed when the engine has cooled down. And now you can remove the valve cover after opening the tank and dismantling the air filter. On Honda’s 52-degree V2, Ralf can very easily demonstrate valve clearance control and basic adjustment using adjusting screws. An excursus explains why valve clearance is required at all, and why the colder intake valves require less of it than the hotter exhaust valves.

Ralf uses the warm-up of the engine to synchronize the carburetor. Both with the simpler classic round clocks and with the more precise electronic measuring devices. Here, too, the aim is to reduce fears. “It’s actually not a complicated thing.” And certainly not an oil change. Important: Filters, O-rings made of rubber and copper sealing rings should be bought in advance: “You can get cheap sets from Louis, Polo or Hein Gericke.” Finally, there is the compression test as an “ECG of the motor” and an open question-and-answer session.

Modern electronics can have a disenfranchising effect

“After 21 years, my conclusion is that you still enjoy screwing, but there is a lack of technical understanding and confidence in your own abilities,” says the course instructor. This is “logical, since there are more and more office jobs and the electronics on the machines seem obscure, even incapacitating.”

In Ralf’s opinion, the quality of the workshops is also deteriorating. He demonstrates it on a freshly fitted rear tire: “A colored point on the tire flank shows the lightest point on the tire as a balancing mark.” It should be above the valve, the point where the rim is heaviest. Bridgestone and Dunlop use yellow points, Heidenau, Metzeler and Pirelli use red points. However, when a participant matures, the marking and valve are by no means aligned. “That’s why the fitter needed so many balancing weights here.”

Learned something again in class. MOTORRAD will soon start a new series with screwdriver tips. So that nobody has to be afraid of seemingly complicated technology.
