Roughchild enlarged the boxer with 750 cubic meters to a full liter. So should be 60 HP and 70 Nm.

BMW R 75/5 conversion
When BMWs were still called toasters

The dash five from BMW were the first boxers without a full swing arm and carried a telescopic fork in the steering head. Roughchild rebuilds one of the pioneer motorcycles in a classic and ultra-modern way.

Hoske tank and Harro tank bag – both are the imperial insignia of the full swing BMWs from 1955 to 1969. What does the R75 / 5 from 1970, which was converted by Roughchild, have to do with it? The / 5 series were the first BMWs with a telescopic fork in the front and a frame not dissimilar to the Norton feather bed. With this combo, the boxers from Munich-Spandau ensure – with appropriate care – for decent motorcycling to this day. The R75 / 5 was the top model until 1973 and was then replaced by the R90 / 6 and its S version.

Roughchilds toaster

Roughchild from distant Los Angeles has specialized in the old two-valve engines from the dash era in recent years. He dramatically upgraded this R75 / 5 from 1973 in terms of chassis and running gear, only to be almost cautious about the look and use of the original system. The conversion is optically supported by the toaster tank of the BMW. With its 17 liters, there was series production from 1973, and the 24-liter tank as an option, but the chrome-plated cheeks on the tank only existed until 1973. But who wants to be petty? Richard von Roughchild restored the said toaster, painted it an exciting Granada red and re-chromed the cheeks. The short fender at the front and the original headlight shell are finished in the same paint. However, this is no longer sitting on a thin telescopic fork with drum brake, but between the two triple clamps of a mighty USD Big Piston fork from Showa, along with a radial brake system from Brembo. For completeness: The fender is adorned with an 18-inch spoked wheel from Excel. The rear wheel in the original swing arm, which is supported by two Ohlins dampers on the redesigned rear frame, is of the same diameter.

Motor drilled out

Richard did a good job with the chassis, so the old boxer with 750 cubic meters and 50 hp must not be left untouched. With the help of new cylinders and pistons, the displacement increases to a good 1,000 cubic meters. They are ventilated by Mikuni carburettors and an airbox in the style of the R100 RS. After the exhaust valves, the exhaust gas finds its way through a newly drawn stainless steel system and peashooter mufflers from Cone. In between, the mixture in the combustion chamber is compressed to a ninth and ignited by a new ignition from Silent hectic and a double ignition coil. Thus, 60 hp and 70 Nm should make use of the four gears of the transmission.

There are ten boxers

Based on the RWSB chassis developed by Roughchild – that stands for “Travel Sports Short Wheel Base” – there are to be ten conversions. We see number two. After Adam Riese, eight are still available. Price on request.

Many are beautiful, but also impassable.

Better to leave it in its original condition.

Conclusion

When it comes to custom bikes, the days of good prices for two-valve boxers such as the R80 or R100 from / 7-series are long gone. Nobody dares to approach the R90 / 6 because of the high prices and the full swing BMWs are sought-after classics to keep as original. So dash fives as the new wrought iron in the customs scene? In the case of the Roughchild Rubin, a wonderful example, even if the basic machines are already insanely expensive in Germany.
