5,000 km test

There are road helmets and sports helmets. This is the case of the latest Scorpion with the full Exo-R1 Air, which replaces the exo-2000 in the range. Ultra TCT composite fiber shell, featherweight at 1.150 grams, rear spoiler, Ellip-Tec 2 visor mechanism, smoked visor, Pinlock MaxVision, Kwikwick 3 interior, Airfit Concept… it announces the color and confirms its sporting destination. It also equips some SBK riders, in particular Alvaro Bautista, leading the championship on his Ducati Panigale V4 R.

Discovery

As soon as the cargo opens, the Exo-R1 Air sets the tone. Welcome to the top of the range and its associated services: Scorpion always delivers its helmet with a clear AND smoked visor, in a dedicated thick cover, as well as an anti-fog Pinlock! Likewise, the Tear-off pre-equipment is present on the screens..

The novelty combines elegance and sportiness, the quality of which is expressed at all levels. The general lines evoke sport and even competition. High, the chin bar gives strength and responds to the powerful styling of the rear, badly bodied. Thus, the high ribs of the helmet run towards an extractor-spoiler assembly with a complex aerodynamic design which is the essence of the design. The brand logo is adorned with a gun barrel shine and, as on the Exo-1400, the R1 sports a high-quality metal central locking control, furiously reminiscent of that of the competitor HJC. Finally, the curved base of the helmet and its spoiler conclude a most successful design.

The same goes for the decorations, modern and differentiating. The dynamic but elegant graphics in this Blue-Black version are combined with resistant paints, with clear contours.

The construction reflects the style. The shell in multi-composite fibers and carbon forms the Ultra TCT (Ultra Thermodynamical Composite Technology) structure. This provides a progressive deformation of the hull even more efficient, allowing to absorb the energy of the impact as much as possible. The internal triple density caps reinforce this buffering effect.

The ventilation (close to that of the Exo-1400) is optimized, with a top air intake with sliding slider (two positions). The chin guard inherits from a control of the same type opening two meshed air intakes which ensure the possible demisting and the arrival of fresh air. Of course, a removable nasal deflector in semi-rigid material provides additional comfort. Three venturi effect extractors complete the device. Two are placed in the low lateral rear position while the last element nests above the aesthetic spoiler encircling the rear of the helmet. This element, in addition to its visual impact, optimizes the air flow through the helmet and improves stability, reduces drag and strain on the neck. And with 1.158 g (verified on the scale), in size M, the Exo R1 Air lives up to its name.

The careful aerodynamics, studied in the wind tunnel, also benefit the visors, treated anti UV, whose fixing elements are integrated into the hull. These incorporate the ELLIP-TEC 2 screen system. Equipped with powerful springs for a very firm plating of the screen against the seal. This device makes the whole airtight and quieter. And this technique gives better resistance to keep the screen in place in the event of a fall.

The chinstrap obviously features a double D buckle. Made of matte titanium, it further enhances the perceived quality of the helmet and the competition aspect. Ditto for the base of the helmet, the opening of which is reduced by an additional thin skirt between the foams which is added to the bib to limit internal eddies. The chinstrap tabs, wide and padded, finalize the comfort aspect.

Threading

The Scorpion Exo-R1 Air has three outer shell sizes (XS-S, M-L and XL-XXL), guaranteeing better comfort for all types of body types. This avoids playing too much with the thickness of the foams. And the brand’s Airfit system (integrated airbag) will best adapt the interior to the contours of your face. The linings receive the KwikWick3 fabric, soft and absorbent and are completely removable and washable. They also offer the possibility of emergency disassembly, in the event of an accident, of the side elements, in order to facilitate the removal of the helmet..

The fitting demonstrates very firm comfort and an enveloping "fit". The good feeling of interior support is verified over time, demonstrating the good quality of the foams used. Particularly ergonomic, the cushions follow the anatomy of the face and surround the ears well. A good point for soundproofing. Likewise, refined towards the temples, the lateral supports naturally let the temples of glasses slip through for a perfect fit on the nose. Much better, at this level, than the Exo-1400.

Dynamic test

The screen switches over 5 levels (+ closing), very gently, without slamming, leaving a small space before total closing. With its central locking pin, handling of the screen is natural and does not pull the visor to one side when it is opened. Closed, the seal is excellent and the reopening is intuitive.

In urban developments, we feel the effects of the many open air vents. The top air intake is particularly effective, bringing a lot of freshness. All air intakes in action, the Scorpion Exo-R1 Air effectively reduces heat. From roadster to sports car, the level of soundproofing is high, with zero parasitic noise. Driving without earplugs on departmental and medium distances is quite possible. Finally, the large eye relief allows very good lateral vision.

On the track, at high speed, the Exo-R1 Air impresses with its stability. Launched at 300 km / h on the Mugello (Italy) on the Aprilia RSV4 1100 Factory, the head does not move at all, the air pressure is perfectly managed. What to concentrate on his piloting without being disturbed, in particular when the pilot leaves the machine to place it in very fast curve. Its lightness contributes significantly to the pleasure of track use. Finally, its coating remarkably absorbs the water of your efforts.

Visor disassembly / assembly

Among the most effective, the Scorpion screen removal system is obvious. The reassembly, with a smoked visor, makes it less easy to locate the fixing lugs. A little habit makes it easier to handle. The quality of the mounting plates is also superior here..

Conclusion

Compact, streamlined and light, the Scorpion Exo-R1 Air is forgotten in use. Stylish, it brings a real sporting presence. Quality of manufacture, fit and finish are appreciable. This helmet offers a wide choice of 3 versions, available in several colors, classic or more exclusive.

  1. A good helmet, but one that suffers may be from a lack of visibility in the market compared to others. Because before Bautista and Quartararo this year, it was not necessarily the most visible brand on the circuit, where HJC, Shoei and Arai are already well established, with big names, Championship winners, and legendary drivers who have their Replica galore … And we know that the more a helmet is seen on pilots, the more people will want to tear it off.

The small X-Spirit III-inspired spoiler on the back, it does wink

  2. yeah Tom, the concern is that indeed, the Niken is only available by reservation … for the moment.

But given the (very) almost unanimous positive judgment of the European press on the machine, that could change quickly if a purchasing dynamic is set in motion …

  3. The problem is that if you have to try it to be excited, it’s a bit like the snake that bites its tail.
