Such an in-line twin is actually made for the motorcycle: It is easy and inexpensive to manufacture, requires little space and offers an appealing performance development without a lot of tuning magic. So it’s no wonder that at the time when a 400 or even 500 was considered a really grown-up motorcycle, practically every Japanese motorcycle manufacturer had something in its range. The sportiest Japanese in-line twins mostly came from Kawasaki. With a dedicated GPZ 500 S in motion, experts in the Winkelwerk could make life difficult for significantly larger machines. So it wasn’t surprising that it was Kawasaki was reserved to shake up the middle class, which had meanwhile degenerated into the boring category, with the completely redesigned ER-6n from the summer of 2005: tubular space frame, side-mounted mono damper, underfloor exhaust made of stainless steel, wave brake discs, a spacey lamp cover – that took care of everything A stir and great sales.

Together with its fully wired sister ER-6f, which was added at the beginning of 2006, the 650 is one of the absolute bestsellers. In the cross-brand approval chart, it is in the top ten; In the internal Kawasaki rating, it is clearly in first place and makes up around a quarter of all new registrations in this country. The agile engine goes well with the stylish packaging: the 650 spontaneously accelerates and has real pressure from 5000 rpm. There is nothing to complain about about the mechanical reliability of the Twin, but there are a few small things you can tell about the ER-6 that its designers had the pressure of the red pencil sharpener on their necks. Coarse welded seams may still be a pure blemish, so is Gevatter Rost less to be trifled with. The brown plague now and then attacks the frame and the said welds there. A partly bad paintwork can be found especially on the red and black painted frames; gold-colored frames seem to be better protected.

Accessories and / or conversions are rarely paid for when buying a used vehicle, but with the Kawasaki a better shock absorber (like from WP or a revised part from www.hh-racetech.de) or mirror extensions are definitely worth a surcharge. A stiff ignition lock or a tank cap axle suffering from a lack of oil are covered “Odds and ends”, a defective control unit is more annoying, but it can hardly be tested. A rattling, chirping exhaust does. Still with original Bridgestone tires? Down with it!
