E10 fuel has been available in Germany for 10 years, but it has not really caught on. The E5 fuel that it was supposed to replace is still there. It remains to be seen whether Shell’s Blue Gasoline will bring about more change here.

At the beginning one of the problems with carburetors: The hydrophilic fuel binds water (bubble), which then results in an aggressive mixture for the soft aluminum of the carburetor. The new fuel should evaporate less and defy higher ambient temperatures.

Shell introduces new fuel to replace E10

Together with Volkswagen and Bosch, Shell has developed a new type of gasoline. It consists of 33 percent sustainable materials and is said to be better than E10.

Motorcyclists and E10: The relationship is complicated. Since 2011, we have been offering fuel with ethanol as an alternative to Super 95. It has not really caught on with either two-wheelers or four-wheelers. Today there will soon be more super with five percent ethanol in the fuel bars than E10. The ekes out a shadowy existence and that despite a better environmental balance. The main points of criticism are the aggressive residues of the water-attracting fuel and its ability to evaporate very quickly, which is amplified by the seasonal use of the motorcycle.

Shell Blue Gasoline

The new fuel – christened Blue Gasoline – is said to contain up to 33 percent renewable shares and thus save up to 20 percent CO2. Not during the combustion in the engine, but during production.

“On the way to climate-friendly mobility, we must not leave any technical possibilities unused, from electromobility to renewable fuels. Every little bit of CO2 that we save can help us achieve our climate goals”, says Dr. Uwe Gackstatter, head of the drive division at Bosch.

The new Blue Gasoline fuel complies with the EN 228 / E10 standard and exceeds these in essential parameters such as storage stability and boiling behavior – both of which are not uninteresting for motorcyclists. The fuel can be sold through the existing network of filling stations and used in vehicles approved for Super 95 E10 petrol. The up to 33 percent renewable shares consist of bio-based, certified naphtha or ethanol. Naphtha is obtained from what is known as tall oil, a by-product in the manufacture of paper, for example. Alternatively, other residual and waste materials can also serve as a starting point, correspondingly also biomass, such as organic waste or wood residues. Doc Brown’s conversion of the DeLorean time machine in Back to the Future II to banana peel instead of plutonium seems closer than expected.

Mopped becomes organic

Since the Blue Gasoline is in principle certified as E10 fuel and from Bosch and Volkswagen has been tested accordingly, nothing speaks against the use of sustainable fuel in the motorcycle. The advantage of the longer storage stability compared to E10 is particularly interesting. In other words: The Blue Gasoline evaporates less during the winter break and also evaporates less when the temperatures rise or at high temperatures at the Mopped-Treff in summer. With sustainable gasoline, motorcycling will not become organic, but it will help to achieve the climate goals until other non-fossil drive technologies become established.

Problem price

Shell plans to add the new fuel to the regular petrol station network in the course of the year. It is not yet clear whether it will replace the E10 fuel or whether it will be served via new petrol pumps. What Shell but already know: The bio-fuel should be in the range of the premium fabric Shell V-Power. What with a average German mileage of 5,000 kilometers per year, should go into the money less than the saved CO2 pays into the account of the environmental balance.

Conclusion

Yes, of course: Doc Brown also dumped beer in the DeLorean’s bio-tank. Nevertheless: Anyone who wants to do something for the environment with the motorcycle and still drive can try the new fuel. Since e-fuels are not yet within reach today and electric motorcycles are likely to remain the exception for a little longer: One of the cleaner alternatives.
