100 km / h, 127 km of autonomy … the true 125 thermal equivalence ?

Daily test of the full version, High Speed (also available in limited version 45 km / h, LS, cheaper)

After the test of the S01 electric scooter, here is the test of its little brother S02 and in particular of the HS version (High Speed) versus the version limited to 45 km / h (LS). The S01 and the S02 are technically identical but the S02 HS is much cheaper and very different in terms of target audience. Because if the S02 seems to arrive after the S01 (if we take into account the numbering), it is he who came out first, in 2014! It was then intended for professionals, which we quickly understand in the look. It is still designed for professional use but is also accessible to individuals. And why would an individual be tempted by a "pro" model? For its price! Because there is no picture in terms of price between the 6,990 euros of S01 and the 5,290 euros of S02, that is to say 1,700 euros of difference for identical performances, even announced even better for the S02. And these prices do not take into account the various aids, which brings the price of the scooter to the price of a first price for a thermal scooter. Suddenly, the ideal urban solution ?

Discovery

We are in the Silence family and the style is therefore consistent between the S01 and the S02, especially on the front panel, with this LED headlight and this elegant light signature..

LED front headlight, with a nice light signature, effective at nightLED headlight, with a nice light signature, effective at night

This similarity is then found at the level of the flat floor then at the level of the rear light, also with LED..

We immediately notice the same battery, removable and transportable on the side, which makes it one of the strengths of the electric model. On the other hand, we notice that the S02 is much longer and ends with a rack, which can be used for a top-case (supplied for the first 500 deliveries). We especially notice that the saddle is much lower and that there is much more room for the feet, between the apron and the saddle (confirmed by a longer wheelbase of the S02 compared to the S01 at 1476 mm against 1450 mm).

Removable 5.6 kWh lithium-ion battery, with integrated 600W chargerRemovable 5.6 kWh lithium-ion battery, with integrated 600W charger

On the technical side, we are on familiar ground, with the same 7 Kw motor and the same 5.6 kW Lithium-Ion battery, always removable and therefore transportable at home. This engine convinced us with its pep, being almost twice as powerful as the entry-level Bosh models. Even the single 5.6 kW battery offers more capacity than more common 4 kW models. But the S02 is lighter than the S01 (6 kilos less with 145 kilos in total with the battery) and it also seems to offer a little more autonomy, even if Silence announces 127 km of autonomy for both models ( in Eco mode in WMTC L3e). To be checked during the test therefore.

The chassis is almost identical to that of the S01, even if with the S02, the two wheels are the same size (120) while the S01 has 120 at the front and 140 at the rear.

In the saddle

Ah, finally a low seat on a scooter. The saddle of the S02 peaks at 750 mm against 820 mm for the S01. Suddenly, the driver of 1.70 will perfectly put both feet perfectly flat. Suddenly, the model is ideal for small sizes. There is also more room for feet … or things, since there is always a hook on the apron to hang a large bag, or even a very large bag..

We find the mode selection on the right stalk to choose between Eco, City and Sport and on the other side the reverse button, very practical to facilitate the fact of parking in town between two other two-wheelers.

We then find exactly the same LCD dashboard under the eyes, large, readable day and night with all the necessary indications, well placed. The meter here gives pride of place to the percentage of remaining battery, placed above the estimate of the number of remaining kilometers. This estimate varies according to the mode chosen with a real autonomy differential according to the modes. Fully charged, the S02 announces 127 km of autonomy in Eco mode, 100 km in City mode and 80 km in Sport mode. Indications to be verified in real life, so certain electric scooters clearly overestimate the possible mileage. Partial double trip (with reset on the counter), exterior temperature, clock, driving mode indicator complete the whole overlooked by an indicator of power used and regeneration capacity under braking. You can also scroll through the different displays on the right stalk.

And there is the application to see his trips made and his consumption, from start to finish. an application to be stowed in the smartphone holder supplied as standard, especially since there are two USB sockets (1A and 2.4 A) on the dashboard.

Contact

A long press on the "mode" button and the scooter is "READY", without a sound. The reaction to the grip is instantaneous, regardless of the mode, even if there is more gnac in sport mode. In printing, the S02 even has more gnac at startup than the S01. A difference attributable either to the lighter weight of the S02 or to a modification of the controller which precisely manages the arrival of power.

In the city

With the S02 we find the ease of driving a compact, light and agile scooter. As a result, we can easily zigzag between the lines of cars, whether solo or in duo, the duo not generating specific sway and especially no sway compared to the S01. This is the advantage of having a lower weight due to a lower saddle itself, including the weights of the rider and passenger..

Silence announces 0 to 50 km / h in less than 4 seconds. And even if it takes 5 seconds, starts are amazing and all 125 are toasted at the green light, including in Eco mode. Because unlike other models limited to 35 or 40 km / h in Eco mode, the Silence S02 can go teasing the 70 km / h in Eco mode (not in town and on the odometer, rather 60 km / h real).

70 km / h in Eco mode!70 km / h in Eco mode !

Suddenly, also with the objective of making the pleasure last, we gladly stay in Eco mode, this one already giving everything you need for everyday urban use with the guarantee of maximizing the possible autonomy. City mode becomes more necessary if you take a fast lane or a ring road. The Sport mode will be reserved for an interurban motorway connection and in the dry. The different modes thus determine the arrival of power, maximum speed and engine braking..

There is only this systematically sound flashing light that tires a little in town, even if its noise can be noticed, especially given the almost total absence of noise from the scooter. And frankly, we quickly get used to this silence, it is the case to say it.

85 km / h in City mode85 km / h in City mode

On the highway

Like the S01, the Silence sets off quickly on the highway, reaching just as quickly the 90 km / h to go without difficulty teasing the 101 km / h on the clock including in duo, that is to say 90 km / h real. But even on the last 10 km / hour, the pickups are clear and frank, unlike the entry-level 125 thermals which sometimes take several kilometers to reach this speed. In fact, one has the impression that the Silence is limited to 100 km / h so easily it gets there; which seems to be the case to protect the engine and the autonomy. It remains at this perfectly stable and safe pace, without even suffering from any overtaking of trucks. In any case, the S02 can therefore take the expressways for peri-urban, as well as many 125 thermals, even if at 90 km / h real, we will avoid taking the motorway in real life, but only on the peri-urban portions. And then, the range decreases significantly in Sport mode at maximum speed..

100 km / h in Sport mode (90 km / h real)100 km / h in Sport mode (90 km / h real)

On departmental

The S02 finds the departmental with pleasure, stalled at 90 km / h (real). In City mode, the decelerations are smooth, giving the impression of a scooter in "free wheels". In Sport mode, the decelerations are more brutal and the times just as much. The switch from City mode to Sport mode while driving generates something almost brutal if you do not expect it.

We thus take pleasure in surveying the kilometers in a fluid, even dynamic way, including as a duo and in the greatest silence which allows nature to be heard. And this is how we realize that the estimate of autonomy is real between the announced mileage still possible and the reality, which is far from being the case with all models of electric scooters. This excellent estimate gives confidence, especially on the electric where we often tighten the "buttocks" when we see the autonomy melt visibly, especially in duo and when it’s cold. However, even as a duo and even with 2 ° C outside, the Silence S02 confirms its autonomy.

Braking

There is no ABS but CBS coupled braking … powerful, even a little too much in the wet (especially with respect to the original tires), despite a single 220 mm disc at the front and 240 mm at the rear. We therefore take the brake levers with two fingers in the wet under penalty of feeling the tires slip, it must be said that we have here tires without brand of origin China.

Comfort

The S01 was very pleasant overall but very sensitive to road defects. S02 does not do better, nor worse. As long as the asphalt is billiards it is very nice thanks to a thick saddle and a shock absorber that seems to work. But as soon as the pavement deteriorates and a fortiori on cobblestones, it becomes really hard with lifts right up to the arms..

Saddle possible but delivered with a two-seater in one pieceSaddle possible but delivered with a two-seater in one piece

On the passenger side, it’s worse. As much on the S01 the passenger could reach the handles, here he must have the extended arms of a Fantastic. The handles can be used more as stowage for transporting objects than for the passenger. And as a duo, he feels the defects of the road even more strongly. And since it has nothing to hold back, it slides quickly towards the pilot at the slightest braking, powerful certainly, but still.

In short, this scooter is not made for a duo, except occasionally and despite rather well placed toe clips.

On the other hand, the low saddle allows the passenger to be felt less by the driver and in particular the sway effect that we often see and that is very pleasant..

And in the end, the passenger still fell in love with this model for everyday use..

Convenient

We appreciated the huge trunk of the S01 allowing to accommodate two full-face helmets. Nothing like that here. There is barely enough space under the saddle to put the extension to charge the scooter and a fluorescent vest, or even rain pants. The 47-liter top-case with the Silence logo is therefore essential. And this top-case can be replaced by a 200-liter box for deliveries.

Autonomy

Silence announces 127 kilometers of autonomy in L3E WMTC. In real use, it loses 1% of battery per kilometer and the range is more in the order of 110 km, like the S01. But beware, the test was done when it was between 2 ° C and 5 ° C with a lot of duo. And we know that batteries do not like the cold (for example my iPhone goes from 100% to 1% in 3 hours, on standby by this cold when it usually lasts at least a day!). The duo also generates a large differential in consumption, drastically dropping the range compared to solo use..

Another point, even if the performance decreases as the kilometers go, the S02 continue to run well even under the remaining 5 km of autonomy. In fact, he even accepts to drive again with 0% of autonomy remaining! Obviously, we wanted to see its limit and its behavior over the last kilometers, some electric scooters being limited to 15 km / h under the 20 or 15 km of remaining autonomy. And in general, at 0%, we push. Nothing like that here, or even under the remaining 5%, you could drive at 20 km / h. And we even managed to drive another 6 kilometers despite a display of 0%, including on a steep hill. To preserve the battery, avoid discharging the battery as much and recharging before. But day by day, we are less likely to find ourselves in a jug several kilometers from home..

110 km of autonomy in real duo and in very cold weather, more solo and with a more normal temperature110 km of autonomy in real duo and in very cold weather, more solo and with a more normal temperature

Charged

Simply plug the scooter into an electrical outlet to charge it, without the need for an additional charger. And you can also extract the battery on its small wheels and its trolley to transport it at home. But to extract it, two conditions: unlock the latch placed under the saddle AND that the scooter is on a central stand. In short, nobody can come and steal your battery in a simple way.

The charging time, slow, is identical to the S01, the battery charging about 12% per hour, or 8 hours in total in general, if you have been up to the last percentages available. A simple calculation makes it possible to verify it since the 600W charger must charge a 5.6 kWh battery, which could even take 9 hours if we go until full discharge (not recommended).

Conclusion

The Silence S02 responds to what is expected of an electric scooter, of course silence but above all of the gnac when starting and even more of the extension without running out of steam until at least 90 km / h real. Better, it is as effective and dynamic in duet as in solo, which already on a thermal is far from obvious. The autonomy of 110 kilometers in real use already makes it possible to consider the daily kilometers necessary to make a round trip even when away from work. But it is above all its price that triggers the envy. Because at 5,290 euros, it is 1,700 euros cheaper than the S01. Better, with the aid, 900 euros for an individual and 1,500 euros for a professional (or 2,400 euros less), it becomes a more than logical solution. Because at 2,890 euros, it becomes a cheaper solution than a good number of thermal scooters (PCX at 3,290 euros), with less maintenance and a fuel budget of 0. And for the city and everyday life, what more could you ask for ?

  1. error as to the price because you communicate that of the 50. The 125 costs 7000 euros (let us thank the cents under the bar of 7000, especially since after test we know that it would be necessary to heavily accessorize the vehicle for normal summer use. -winter :

if not at the price of 7000 euros this vehicle if it is used very little will be more polluting than a thermal vehicle; it is necessary to count its manufacture, its use and its final reconditioning (at least the batteries)
