Penalized for his overtaking considered dangerous last Sunday at the Austrian GP (on the same Red Bull Ring circuit), Johann Zarco must start from the pit lane and quickly catch up with his competitors to score as many points as possible.

Departure

Pol Espargaro on his KTM took off perfectly from his pole position, but Joan Mir appeared in front of him under braking! Suzuki n ° 32 widens at the exit of the first corner but continues its race in front. At the same time, Johann Zarco starts from the pit lane…

Starting from ninth place on the grid, Fabio Quartararo started the 1st lap in 11th position behind Lecuona, Rossi, Oliveira, Dovizioso, Viñales, Rins … In front, Miller attacked Espargaro, then passed Mir and took the lead! Nakagami performs a masterful outside on Espargaro in curve n ° 5 !

The leading trio goes on four laps, observing each other very closely. The small group is ahead of the duo Espargaro and Rins. At the heart of the peloton, Quartararo misses the first and very heavy braking. Nakagami sets off an attack in the next hairpin but Mir reclaims second place in the twisty section.

The fastest rider on the track is … Johann Zarco! But our “international” No. 5 is still in 22nd and last place … Far ahead, Mir takes the reins of the race and distances himself from the turbulent Miller and Nakagami. A second behind, Espargaro is put under pressure by Rins…

Dovizioso, Viñales, Binder, Oliveira, Lecuona, Rossi and Quartararo ride in a relatively tight formation. The n ° 04 Ducati breaks away from his pursuers at the start of the second third of the race and targets the Suzuki n ° 42 which is ahead of him by a small second..

Determined to enter the Top 5 on their employer’s land, Binder and Oliveira quickly put Dovizioso back together … RC16 n ° 33 even passed Desmosedici n ° 04 in the 13th lap and moved away with disconcerting ease. !

Fighting for a disappointing tenth place with his comrades Fabio Quartararo and Valentino Rossi, Maverick Viñales raises his hand in the middle of a curve and gives up a few places. The Yamaha M1 is doing its own thing again … This is unlikely to reassure our n ° 20 who is struggling to stay ahead of the championship.

At the very end of the 16th lap, Nakagami took advantage of an impressive corner speed to grab his second place from Miller! The Australian retaliated but was quickly overtaken by his Japanese rival. Mir takes advantage of this beautiful fight to take flight.

Suddenly, at the end of the straight line of the pits, deprived of brakes, Viñales jumps from his motorbike launched at more than 230 km / h! The Yamaha n ° 12 ended its mad race in an air-fence and caught fire. The red flags are immediately waved … But the race is not over: it is restarted for 12 laps !

Second start

Mir is off to an excellent start again ahead of Miler, Espargaro, Nakagami, Oliveira, Binder, Dovizioso, Rins, Rossi, Lecuona, etc. Quartararo is thirteenth, Zarco 17th. Jack Miller takes the lead on braking Turn 4 and withstands a counterattack from Joan Mir in Turn 5…

Fighting against a horde of KTMs, Dovizioso took advantage of a small error by Binder to integrate the Top 5. Quartararo was then virtually only two points ahead of the Italian driver in the provisional. On the track, the young Frenchman is chased by his – our! – compatriot Zarco.

While he was comfortably installed in the lead before the interruption of the race, Mir is now manhandled by Espargaro and Oliveira on their KTMs! Behind his control screen, Herve Poncharal crosses his fingers for his Portuguese driver to hold on for six more laps…

Member of the official KTM team, Pol Espargaro passed Jack Miller in the penultimate corner of the 7th lap! Binder misses the first braking of the 8th lap and lets slip a top 5 assured, a probable podium, even a second victory! The small fault of n ° 33 benefits Dovizioso who is in fourth place on the lookout…

Espargaro whips his Katoche and seems a hint faster than Miller. To prevent any attack from "JackAss", the Spanish rider takes care to close the slightest mouse hole … But by stretching his trajectories too tightly, he loses precious km / h in the stretches against the Ducati !

The last lap sees Miller and Espargaro compete for first place under the mustaches of the No. 88 KTM of the French team Tech 3! Jack and Pol cross iron – steel, aluminum, carbon, etc. ! – and offer (TV) spectators a sensational spectacle.

In the end, Miler and Espargaro especially offer Miguel his first victory in the premier class: logically focused on their intense battle, the Australian n ° 43 and the Spanish n ° 44 get in the way in the last part of the Austrian route and are beaten by Portuguese n ° 88 !

Concentrated on his "own" trajectories, Oliveira emerges much stronger from the last corner and is the first to tumble under the checkered flag. The vice-world champion Moto3 (2015) and Moto2 (2017) won his first success in the premier class, the first for a Portuguese rider and the first for the Tech3 team. cock-a-doodle Doo !
