Mighty 125 hp, an incredibly long wheelbase, mega-wide 240 mm rear tires, weighing seven hundred pounds – this is not a machine for desperate bonsai pilots or delicate ladies’ hands. When the Suzuki Intruder M 1800 R presented itself in 2006 with a modern twin cam V2 and a sporty upside-down fork in rod style, it was clear that the “M” stands for “macho” in the largest product of the traditional Intruder family to date. Suzuki probably wanted to kick the American traffic light cracker Harley V-Rod, which has been stirring up the scene since 2002 with a similarly impressive performance (117 hp). But it was also a good 5000 euros more expensive and therefore only a dream for younger drivers with limited financial possibilities.

However, power cruiser fans were bothered by things like plastic covers, lack of handiness, poorly metered four-piston radial brakes and tricky starting maneuvers because the clutch sometimes reacts insensitively. Changed friction disks should solve this problem from 2010, but in general it should be clear that with such large gears and brutal torque the smoothness of a 250 cannot be expected. From 2008 to 2012, the C 1800 R supplemented the range, also with a cardan shaft, but with 16-inch wheels, lowered mudguards and classic headlights.

With “only” 114 hp it loses the traffic light duel against the M sister, but does not see itself as a competitor either – as I said: different motorcycle, different buyers, primarily more sedate drivers. The other Intruder 1800 “models” earn the additional title (R2, RZ, RT) only through equipment variants (see below) – a matter of taste, but also a good choice.

Two colors on a motorcycle and another pair of black wheels, according to Suzuki logic, that already results in a new model: the M 1800 RZ (2011 to today).

Due to its design (large gear wheels, brilliant torque), the clutch is subject to relatively high forces; in the early model series, clutch picking was often criticized when starting up. In some cases, authorized workshops have retrofitted a thicker pane. But that is also the best-known weakness of the otherwise very reliable motorcycle. However, hobby screwdrivers can make serious mistakes with simple work such as changing the oil. Tip: first fill in three liters of engine oil, then let it run for 15 minutes, then leave it alone for five minutes and finally top up the remaining 0.6 liters. A correctly documented maintenance plan is definitely an advantage. Caution: Since previous owners with a sporting past may have made the most of the (modest) lean angle of the Suzuki Intruder M 1800 R, it is better to look for scratches on the footrest mounts. Popular accessories: exhaust systems from Miller or Thunderbike.

The availability on the market: medium high.

According to the Schwacke list, there should be a used Suzuki M 1800 R, built in 2006, with around 40,000 kilometers for less than 6,000 euros. A misjudgment. Little goes below 8000 euros, the range is extremely thin. However, the air is thin for suppliers over 10,000 euros, because some dealers only charge around 12,000 euros for new vehicles (previous year’s models, re-imports). Overall, the Suzuki Intruder 1800 are in good demand, used cars, especially the M variant is very popular with a wide range of cruiser fans (age: 30+). The classically designed Suzuki C 1800 R is only popular with buyers in the 55 plus age group, but does not linger long in the store when the price is fair, because it is seldom offered and sought after by enthusiasts. Very interesting: stylish noble conversions, which are advertised as sparkling, brilliant hums (new value: over 20,000 euros) with expensive parts and less than 5,000 kilometers for 15,000 euros. If the professional forge responsible for the conversion offers such a piece itself, it will go away. On the other hand, if a private provider tries to get rid of a similarly beautiful machine, it will hardly achieve more than 12,000 euros.
