the “Alpinstars Avant / Resist” shares 2nd place with Hein Gericke’s station wagon. Ideal combination for summer power cruising: is not afraid of full throttle, offers proper protection, is pleasantly light. However, the thin trousers are not very convincing.

the “Hellfire Rising” shares the last place with the “Highway 1 Retro II”. The inexpensive textile suit – worth considering for power cruisers who want to travel. When gliding around in fair weather, the sweaty climate that quickly develops in a suit is a nuisance.

The 6th place goes to the “Vanucci Passatempo”. The hit in city traffic: airy, light, comfortable. The horror on stretches of the motorway: poor weather protection, fluttery jacket. Nothing for longer tours, but good for short everyday trips.

Leather, jeans, synthetic fiber textiles

Leather, jeans, synthetic fiber textiles – everything is possible when the cruiser rider saddles up. Some like it classic, others prefer to spur their power cruiser wild and dress sporty – the image of the fringed fredel is definitely obsolete. Ten combinations compete for product testing.

Hallelujah, what a sound! The rental Street Bob from Harley-Davidson Stuttgart Sud could maintain an entire concert hall. But the test round on the Swabian Alb is also a good stage. On the one hand for the rocking tones that escape from the Kesstech exhaust system, on the other hand, many shop windows when driving through town serve as large mirror surfaces for posing when the cruiser rider rolls by with different clothes.

Realistic test runs over 150 km / h

A good appearance is one thing, but tough test criteria such as a motorway test, country road lap and shock absorption test stand in the way of this. Ten combinations for cruiser drivers competed and had to prove themselves in the tough MOTORRAD comparison. Incidentally, the providers were given a free hand in choosing the right station wagon. It only said that with the equipment through the city, in the country as well as on the highway with well over 150 km / h realistic test runs are carried out. In order to raise the high-speed bar a bit, the clothing testers got themselves a hot power bike in addition to the Harley: the Ducati Diavel.

Because now the cruiser scene is more complex than it was years ago, when fringed self-confessed slow drivers – improve: connoisseurs – gondolaed through the area at low speed. Logically, that very few clothes cause trouble. But if you roar on a Harley V-Rod, Suzuki M 1800, Yamaha V-Max or the Diavel with well over 100 hp, you shouldn’t make a flutter.

Body-hugging cuts play a major role

Aerodynamics and fall protection – both can be achieved with a body-hugging cut – therefore play a major role in current cruiser clothing. No wonder, that Alpinestars and Difi send tight leather jackets into the race that would also fit snappy naked bikes.

And then combine these with biker jeans, which provide sufficient security and are particularly easy to wear and airy and follow the idea of chilled-out gliding. hero and Ixs think similarly, but choose leather jackets that, trimmed for vintage, appear less sporty and more fashionable. Fits well with the genre discussed here. At Highway 1, the cruising division of Clothing Louis, leather jackets go with leather jeans, while Rokker and Vanucci are all about denim.

Since many cool cruiser cowboys only ride out in the blazing sun, otherwise they prefer to hang out in the saloon (or in the inn or in the motorway stop), a comprehensible selection. Because then weather protection is a minor matter that can be neglected. Or you have to take a rain suit with you.

Security is the be all and end all

Greater suitability for tours and less stress on long-distance stages – for example when traveling to biker meetings – promise themselves polo (Drive and Hellfire) as well as Hein Gericke with their station wagons, all of which can be linked. Advantage: less draft, no sliding up in the rump area, better fall protection. Hein Gericke and Hellfire are equipped with climate membranes, which is certainly an advantage when traveling through Scandinavia or on tours through the Alps. Strolling around the boulevard is also class-specific for cruiser clothing, and heavy, sweaty combinations tend to be annoying. But it is up to each driver to weigh the advantages and disadvantages according to their personal purpose.

On the other hand, there is no pardon when it comes to security. A minimum equipment with tested CE protectors on shoulders, elbows and knees should now be standard – with all the love for easy riding. Some providers have also equipped their combinations with slide-in back and hip protectors for the shootout, if not already part of the standard equipment. This increases the price, but is recommended to all prospective buyers. In any case, in the test, the protectors hardly interfered with driving comfort. But read for yourself.

So was tested

Ten cruiser station wagons in the product test

Dentges

Despite being cool, cruiser clothing shouldn’t be too casual.

Cruiser drivers like it more dignified – at least that’s the cliche. But the MOTORRAD testers also assessed the equipment, workmanship and quality of the materials with particularly strict eyes. So supple, dyed leather receives more points than thickly varnished hides. There are also major differences between denim fabrics, for example in how elaborately aramid fibers are woven. The test drives took place in the sun and 20 to 27 degrees. Since many cruiser pilots are often avowed good weather drivers, the air conditioning when it is warm – i.e. the ventilation (options) – was taken into account just as much as the weather protection (rain and wind protection, insulation). Incidentally, only two providers (Hein Gericke, Polo) sent clothing equipped with climate membranes into the race, which is disadvantageous due to its design on dry summer trips and only comes up trumps when it rains continuously.

Regarding the safety criterion: on the test bench at Sas-Tec in Markgroningen, the testers determined shock absorption values based on the CE test standards for back and joint protectors. And checked their fit while driving, because the best CE protectors are of little use if they do not enclose the joints close to the body and fit snugly. The abrasion and tear resistance of the upper material was also evaluated. Information about fit and wearing comfort was provided by trying on several test persons and driving on a defined test lap (through town, country road, motorway).

Final evaluation and conclusion

Ten cruiser station wagons in the product test

BILLION

The final score of the MOTORRAD test.

Despite a wide range of prices and orientations (all-weather touring to summer boulevard cruising), the conclusion is that there is no complete failure. As a result, cruiser pilots do not do badly with any of the combinations tested here – from 400 euros you are properly equipped, great! The “Tourer” equipment (Hein Gericke, Polo Drive, Hellfire) scores well, but in summer temperatures above 25 degrees, the combinations of leather on the top (good safety and aerodynamics) and denim on the bottom (airy, airy!) Deserve the most sympathy . The Ixs combination with the wonderfully high-quality jacket is a hit, be sure to try it on yourself!
