BMW R 1300 GS Erlkonig
New stage of evolution will come in 2023

It’s no surprise that the new BMW R 1300 GS is coming. But the Erlkonig pictures at this stage of development are still a small sensation. We explain when it will come and what will change.

The Erlkonig pictures of the BMW R 1300 GS show a completely new motorcycle. And the focus of development is clearly in the chassis area. There are two reasons:

  1. The last one really “new” GS in 2013 meant switching to the water boxer. All attention was paid to the new engine.
  2. The second upgrade from 2018 (with the introduction of the Shift Cam) also focused on the boxer.

BMW R 1300 GS should be lighter

In addition, weight can be saved not so much in the engine, but rather in the periphery. And getting lighter, that should be at the top of the specifications for the new GS. Even if during the first simulation games for the new GS it was probably not known that the new Ducati Multistrada V4 Not only is it significantly stronger, but also lighter than the current GS. Between the Multistrada V4 and the R 1250 GS are currently 6 kilograms. In view of the considerable difference in performance of 34 PS (Multi 170 PS, GS 136 PS) for dynamic driving values such as acceleration and pulling power, that’s a lot and also a good deal for handling. Accordingly, these 6 kilograms are likely to have weighed on the minds of the BMW developers.

But performance shouldn’t be the big selling point for travel enduro bikes. But more power would not damage it either, so we are assuming an increase in displacement by another 50 to around 1,300 cm³ for the next GS. BMW had already registered with the patent office in 2019 Type designation M 1300 GS let protect.

Mechanical changes to the valve timing

The one at the Erlkonig with a fabric cover “capped” Cylinder heads even indicate fundamental mechanical changes in the valve control. In any case, a larger bore or a longer stroke would not need any extra camouflage. A new framework, on the other hand, does. There is more than enough to camouflage the cane of the new BMW R 1300 GS, as shown by the tubular wallpaper, which is attached to the original pipes with cable ties. They hide the actual framework. The engine shots, however, seem real. The bluff then suddenly ends under the driver’s seat and gives way to someone else. From here on, the rear frame is provided with a kind of plastic cover. Anyone who makes this effort not only has something to hide – and wants to achieve a lot. The new frame should not only be lighter, it should also cost less.

In addition to the new frame, there is also a new swing arm

However, the new swing arm with internal cardan shaft on the new BMW R 1300 GS will not cost less. In contrast to the old component, it is a complex, wildly jagged affair and even looks shorter than on its predecessor. That may be deceiving, but it would fit the general thrust of the new R 1300 GS.

Compared to the R 1250 GS and even the F 900 GS, the new BMW R 1300 GS looks more delicate and clearly wants to be more of an off-road flea than a touring steamer. The fairing with a short duckbill more oriented towards the front wheel and the low-lying headlights with individual LED spots make the new 1300 GS not only more compact, but also more aggressive. However, the black paneling seen in the Erlkonig pictures is still so coarse that one can only speculate with regard to the appearance of the new BMW R 1300 GS.

BMW R 1300 GS with distance radar

The distance radar will probably find its place between the now far drawn down, more aggressive headlights and the now much larger, also deeply drawn down pane. In general, despite its wiry appearance, the 1300s won’t miss anything in terms of electronic and digital support. It has a very decisive advantage: it weighs nothing.

You can find out more about the new BMW R 1300 GS in the magazine, in MOTORCYCLE 14/2021.

Conclusion

It is clear that a completely new GS is in the starting blocks. But when does it come? We expect a new GS in model year 2023. Why? Because the rule of thumb in this discipline is roughly as follows: a smaller update every 5 years, a new GS every 10 years. The last gentle upgrade was 2018 and the last really “new” GS rolled out in 2013 (switch to water boxers).
