Tires - Michelin commits to its colors in the endurance world championship -

Ousted from MotoGP by Bridgestone because of the mono-brand tire, Michelin will line up a Honda in its own colors on all rounds of the world endurance championship, in the hands of William Costes, Hugo Marchand and Joseph Monge.

Calendar of the 2009 World Endurance Championship

  • April 18/19: Le Mans (24H, France)

  • May 31: Oschersleben (8am, Germany)

  • July 4: Albacete (8H, Spain)

  • July 26: Suzuka (8am, Japan)

  • September 12/13: Bol d’Or (24H, France)

  • November 14: Doha (8 a.m., Losail circuit, Qatar)

Michelin, which has withdrawn from MotoGP now as a mono-brand in favor of Bridgestone for at least three years, will have "for the first time in its history"a motorcycle in its colors (Michelin Power Research Team) for the entire endurance world championship.

The Clermont-Ferrand firm will also equip the Yamaha Austria Racing Team (Yart), reigning vice-champion of the discipline, and will be involved in the Spanish and Italian national sprint championships..

"It’s an innovative approach that brings us closer to our users", tells AFP Frederic Henry Biabaud, head of motorcycle racing at Michelin:"we realize that we learn a lot more things in the race than in practice. This therefore saves us time in terms of development with technical progress more quickly applicable to road tires.".

Like its competitors – notably Bridgestone – Michelin says it prefers multi-brand competitions because "competition generates progress". The bibendum withdrew from MotoGP this year after 36 years of presence, 26 world championship titles and 350 victories in the premier class.

The Bibendum had already left F1 for the same reason in 2007, giving Bridgestone the position of sole manufacturer..
