Action cam with image stabilization

Since autumn 2018, the new GoPro Hero 7 Black has been an integral part of all video productions by the colleagues at 1000PS. Your previous experiences with it have quickly made it clear that the new generation has improvements not only in the brochure, but also in practice that make video life easier for us bikers.

Actually, the differences to the predecessor are not that big: There is no difference in terms of the quality of the photo and video recordings, and the maximum possible resolution of 4K has also remained the same. The 7 series was only equipped with more RAM, which enables a few new functions.

Image stabilization is convincing in most cases

The highlight is the greatly improved electronic image stabilization called “HyperSmooth”. This manages, at least in most cases, to smooth out motorcycle vibrations. So far, these have often resulted in unusable recordings if the camera is not mounted on the helmet but directly on the bike.

The new timewarp mode gives me just as much pleasure. This allows so-called hyperlapse videos to be made, i.e. time-lapse recordings in which the camera moves. For example, the most beautiful sections of a tour can be shortened in time and made worth seeing. Fortunately, the dimensions of the camera are unchanged, all accessories of the 5th and 6th generation are compatible, including batteries. I can definitely recommend the new Hero 7 Black to ambitious two-wheeler filmmakers. Whoever mounts the camera mainly on the helmet or body in order to create beautiful memory recordings can, however, relax with the cheaper older models.

Overview and price comparison

Noticed positively: Better image stabilization, compatible with older accessories

Noticed negatively: Relative expensive

Size: 62 x 45 x 33 mm

Price: 429.99 euros

MOTORCYCLE Rating: 4.5 stars out of a possible 5

Conclusion

The GoPro Hero 7 Black was able to convince with some new features in the first test. The image stabilization in particular provides real added value. However, the action cam with a starting price of 429.99 euros is not necessarily a bargain.
