Is it worth comparing armor tapes? MOTORRAD chief screwdriver Gerry Wagner only raises his eyebrows briefly at this question, but all the longer on his cigarette, until we hear the answer from mighty steam clouds: “Of course, because the differences will be huge!” The oracle from the underground car park has spoken.

This is how MOTORRAD tests in the workshop

Of course, repairs using duct tape are considered a provisional Frickel solution by professionals. Nevertheless, no professional workshop wants to do without the sticky tool. How do our MOTORCYCLE screwdrivers rate the twelve test candidates in practice?

For the trained two-wheel mechanic Gerry Wagner, for example, it is important that the armored tape can be torn lengthwise into fine strips, because he likes to use it as a rim tape replacement. MOTORRAD fleet manager Tobias Wassermann attaches great importance to all-round suitability, so that small wounds on bikes or equipment during photo rides or transports can be quickly repaired.

This is how MOTORRAD tests in the laboratory

Does it stick or not …? Instead of the subjective thumb test, MOTORRAD prefers to rely on the high-precision measuring equipment from the materials laboratory of the cleaning specialist Karcher for this part of the exercise.

To know how well an adhesive sticks, you have to peel it off again. Sounds logical and is also easy to measure if you know how. Two people who know it particularly well are Daniel Manocchio and David Berke from the Karcher materials laboratory, world market leader for cleaning technology. Above all, however, you have the right test device at hand to determine the bond strength indicated in the evaluation boxes.

Things to know about glue

What is particularly common is that adhesive as such is technically difficult to grasp: “Materials such as steels are clearly defined by standards. It is more difficult with plastics, and with adhesives it will eventually be devastating. Everyone cooks their own soup, ”explains Manocchio. At least the bond strength can be determined uniformly.

And there are also uniform rules as to when and how what sticks: “Basically, the cleaner, the more likely it is to be successful!” Summarizes the Karcher laboratory manager. In other words: The surfaces should be meticulously cleaned, preferably with solvents, so that the “Bepper” sticks to them for a long time. How well it actually lasts depends on the material itself, says Manocchio: “The central question: is the material wettable well or poorly at the micro level? This can be checked well with water. If there are droplets – that is, water-repellent surfaces – the adhesive will hold up less well. ”At this point, in a nutshell: Metals have a high surface energy and can be glued on well, while plastics are sometimes, sometimes, particularly hairy with polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene (PE ) – exactly the materials that can be found in abundance in car and motorcycle construction – keyword “yoghurt cups”.

And with that, our gaze falls on the Deauville outside in the parking lot. Does she have any idea what is about to happen in the course of the practical tests in the MOTORRAD workshop? A good girl, you stick high, high, high …

Service: glue properly

Together with the gluing professionals from Uhu and Henkel, we look at typical damage to motorcycle and equipment and say whether and how a repair by gluing is possible.

Fairing parts

Depending on which plastic the parts are made of, they can either be glued very well or not at all. So-called low-energy plastics (e.g. PET, PP or PE) would have to be surface-activated chemically – impossible for D.I.Y. screwdrivers to handle. Much more promising is the repair of parts made of ABS, fiberglass or Plexiglas. These can be repaired, for example, using “cold welding”. Tip: Uhu Allplast, Teroson plastic repair case.

Boots / soles

Contact bonding (by applying adhesive on both sides) and the then necessary pressure build-up are difficult to handle with shoe soles. Permanent repairs can only be carried out by craft businesses that are appropriately equipped. However, it is worth trying to reattach a sole using silane-modified adhesives (e.g. Uhu Max Repair extreme). It only becomes problematic if there are silicones in the adhesive area. Because no glue wants to adhere properly to these non-polar plastics.

Plastic thread / torn retaining lugs

If the plastic can basically be glued, a damaged thread can be filled, for example, with liquid epoxy resin (Uhu Plus quick-setting) or with kneadable epoxy compound (Uhu Powerkitt). In the latter case, the screw can be screwed into the not yet hardened putty. Teroson offers the sandable two-component plastic repair adhesive PU 9225 UF ME, which can also be used to restore missing retaining lugs.

Textile / leather combination

Textile fabrics are generally considered to be good adhesion partners by adhesive experts, so a crack in the outer skin could be repaired with a suitably elastic and flexible adhesive. However, a water-repellent coating or impregnation of the fabric can be problematic – gluing on it is almost impossible. As a rule, leather can also be glued well, either by patching or by means of hardening wet gluing. Tip: Pattex power glue, Uhu Max Repair extreme. Special repair patches that adhere to coated fabric are available for damaged climate membranes: McNett Gore-Tex Repair Kit.

helmet

Even if the plastic of the helmet outer shell is considered to be easy to glue: Stay away from filling cracks or the like. If the structure of the helmet is so damaged, it practically no longer has any protective function. It looks different if the edge sealing tape has come loose or an attached air scoop has to be fixed again. These can be repaired with power adhesives or gap fillers. However, not all adhesives are compatible with foams (EPS, EPP, etc.). If necessary, use special agents here too (e.g. Uhu Por).

Housing cover

Metal is generally considered a good bonding partner, but cast parts are more difficult to bond than drawn metal parts due to casting residues. Permanently gluing a crack in an engine cover will therefore be almost impossible. But short-term emergency repairs on the go are actually always possible, provided you have the right adhesive tool in your luggage. Teroson offers the Metal Magic Steel Stick, a steel-filled, kneadable epoxy compound. Uhu offers the liquid metal adhesive for such work.

Tank / seals

Sheet steel can actually be glued well due to its high surface energy. A crack in the metal tank could be worked on with epoxy resin and additionally with fiberglass mats. Once cured, it is a thermoset that is no longer chemically soluble (even with gasoline). However, liquid could infiltrate the adhesive in the long run. Plastic tanks made of nylon, PP or PE cannot be glued. With plenty of practice and skill, however, these could be hot-welded. For this purpose, special plastic welding wires are available in specialist shops or on the Internet. Defective O-rings can be repaired using the Loctite O-ring set. You can make the nitrile round rubber yourself using the enclosed template and cutting knife in the desired size.

The little ABC of glue

To inform

What should be glued anyway? Without more precise information on the material properties and composition, it is difficult to find the right adhesive. On the packaging and package inserts, very specific instructions are usually given on adhesive properties, intended use and processing time. Whoever does not pay attention to this, works for the bin. Also observe the warning notices – especially in order to rule out undesired interactions in the adhesive area. Detailed data sheets can usually also be downloaded from the manufacturers’ websites. There you will also find very specific information on recommended protective equipment (glasses, gloves …) and what to do in the event of an accident with the adhesive.

Prepare

Even if the starting materials are considered to be easy to glue: Failure is inevitable if the surface is not prepared accordingly – in other words, it is cleaned and is therefore free of grease, dust and oil. When purchasing the adhesive, also buy the corresponding products (e.g. a primer as an adhesion promoter) at the same time.

To process

Once the glue has been applied, everything has to go hand in hand and every grip has to be perfect. It is clearly too late to study the clues now. If the handling is complicated and the environment is difficult, do a few drying exercises in order to acquire a routine in handling the glue or the glued joints. In the case of contact bonds, specific flash-off times are specified, which must be observed.
