1. Hegau / Lake Constance

Lake Constance lies deep in the south of the republic. In front of it the volcanoes of the Hegau are enchanting, in the distance the Alpine chain. All around, winding roads flow through hilly landscapes. The best spots can only be reached in a zigzag course. A popular meeting place for motorcycles is on the 867 meter high Neuhewen, the highest of all Hegau mountains. Suggestion: After a quick descent, swing from Leipferdingen over the ridge of the old postal route before descending to Tengen. After Bublingen you cross the Swiss border, then up to Opfertshofen, later Stein am Rhein and Wangen. From here you drive over narrow, windy roads up to the Schiener Berg. Then the descent to Bankholzen, a lap of honor over the Hori peninsula and into the beer garden in the port of Horn. Then via Radolfzell and Ludwigshafen to Bonndorf. Detour to Haldenhof, 200 meters above the lake. Then surf back to the starting point through the Hegau mountains and the Wasserburg valley.

Information on the Hegau / Bodensee motorcycle tour

Break tips: Biker meeting point “Hegaublick”, old town of Tengen and Blumenfeld, old town of Stein am Rhein, Hohenklingen Castle. Detour to Sigmaringen: the Zundapp Museum in the Zoller-Hof brewery. Knopfmacherfels, Beuron Abbey, Windegg / Witthoh lookout near Tuttlingen.

Stay: One of the oldest inns in southern Germany, the “Scharf Eck”, is located in the middle of the Fridingen / Danube area. Highly recommended along with its down-to-earth cuisine (www.scharfeck.de). The “Sternen” inn in Bankolzen is one of the better establishments (www.zum-sternen.de). The “Schienerberg” inn on rails is cheaper. Further hostel recommendations: “Jagerhaus” / Donautal, “Schlossli”, Horn.

2. Vogtland – curve frenzy

Here in Vogtland, corner robbers feel more exciting than anywhere else. No matter where you drive in the Saxon Vogtland: It goes up and down and constantly sharp around the corner. This also applies to the capital Plauen, where motorcycling is more fun than in other German cities. Routes that you never forget lead, for example, from Bad Elster to Landwust or from Markneukirchen to Klingenthal. Always angled, sometimes steep and blessed with little traffic, bikers of all types simply feel in seventh heaven. Especially in the music district, people cheer under their helmets. You could drive up the Aschberg driveway ten times. The view is great, but the slopes are better. Therefore, an exact route is not so important. All streets are fun here.

Break tips: Plauen (Art Nouveau, pubs, restaurants), Syrau with Drachenhohle, Markneukirchen Instrument Museum, Klingenthal, Space Museum in Morgenrothe, Goltzschtalbrucke near Netzschkau (largest brick bridge in the world), Mylau, Schonfels and Voigtsberg castles, “Eibenstock” motorcycle meeting point, Czech border at Ebmath and dam Pirk.

Stay: In Plauen: Pension “Matsch” (www.matsch-plauen.de), Hotel “Theater” (www.dormero.com), Hotel “Alexandra” (www.hotel-alexandra-plauen.de).

3. Saarland – cruise

Our recommendation here is: no circular route, but sweeping through the Saarland. Also, often close to the border with Rhineland-Palatinate. Start at the German-French border near Perl, then enjoy the wide, long curves between vineyards, forest islands and wind parks. Later in the most exciting valley of the Saarland: in the canyon with the imposing Saar loop in front of Mettlach. Behind Mettlach you reach the foothills of the Hunsruck, after Losheim the country road swings up out of the forest and offers great views. At Losheimer See then motorbikes like sand on the sea. Time to talk about gasoline. Everyone agrees: The Saarland is pretty damn close to a motorcycle heaven in Germany – no traffic lights, no oncoming traffic, hardly any median, small, winding streets. Nonnweiler, Sotern, Asweiler, Freisen, Reitscheid, inlet in St. Wendel. Ideal for taking a break. Then off to the Ostertal. Neunkirchen, the second largest city in Saarland, is bypassed, then up on the hump between Mandelbachtal and Bliestal. What a vastness! Gersheim, Altheim, Hornbach, au revoir!

Break tips: Saarschleife near Mettlach, replica of the Roman Villa Borg near Perl, baroque old town of Blieskastel, Wolfspark by Werner Freund in Merzig (www.wolfspark-wernerfreund.de), historical railways (www.museums bahn-losheim.de; www.ostertal bahn. de), detour to Schengen (www.schengen-tourist.lu).

Stay: The “Le Journal” in St. Wendel is recommended from 43 euros (single room) and 64 euros (double room). Towards the end of the tour, the “Hotel Bliesbruck” in the town of the same name (www.bliesbruck.de), from 49 euros.

4. Franconian rock garden

The white rock faces of Franconian Switzerland soar into the sky as bizarre as the peaks of the Dolomites. An area not only for climbers, but also for motorcyclists who are addicted to curves. Half-timbered villages, castles, an exorbitant density of breweries, endless scenic highlights. Those who tackle the 300-kilometer tour will find that and more. Start in Lauf, then you curve dizzy over Hiltpoltstein, Pretzfeld, Behringersmuhle, Plankenfels, Scheblitz, Weismain, Wallersberg, Hollfeld, Pegnitz and Hersbruck. There are countless opportunities for spectacular stops along the dream routes: local and landscape panoramas, caves, museums, everything is unforgettable.

Information about the motorcycle tour in Franconia

Break tips: Bruckmeyer brewery in Pottenstein, Krug-Brau in Breitenlesau, Hubner brewery in Steinfeld, motorcycle meeting point “Kathi-Brau” not far from Aufseb. A magnet for bikers, especially on weekends. Furthermore, Rabenstein Castle, Pottenstein Castle, Brunner’s Oldtimer Museum in Monchs, the Sophienhohle (stalactite cave) and the historic town hall of Marktzeuln. Whoever drives the winding asphalt belts of Franconian Switzerland will discover other worthwhile stops.

Stay: In Aufseb, the place with the highest density of breweries in the world, you can spend the night in a brewery: Gasthof “Reichold” (www.reichold.de). Also recommended in the center of the region: Gasthof “Drei Linden” in Obertrubach (www.drei-linden.com).
