With the motorcycle to the North Pole? Nobody dares. Driving to work on two wheels in winter? More like that. But everything is only fun if the clothing protects against the biting cold. MOTORRAD tested the most important clothes for the upcoming winter season.

Building bridges – great thing. For example, to get across the river with dry feet. Also in a figurative sense, for example when you invite strangers to coffee for general international understanding. Donkey bridges are also great as they help the memory on the jumps. Cold bridges, on the other hand, are really bad. Do not you know? Yes, definitely. If really not, here is a self-test to do it yourself: just wait until it is well below ten degrees cold outside, then take out the motorcycle and drive off. Just a little wrongly dressed, and within minutes the cold will creep through every crack and pester the driver until he gives in, freezing. The inlets for the cold airflow only need to be tiny, but it is precisely these barely visible weak points that quickly destroy the driving pleasure. In motorcycle clothing, even if it is labeled as weatherproof, the said cold spots often occur on the sleeves and the collar. Only a few station wagons on the market claim to be suitable for winter.

When buying a suit, you should therefore pay attention to clever solutions when trying it on, such as sleeve ends as a labyrinth construction with tight stretch cuffs. The sleeves can then overlap the glove cuffs, water and wind must remain outside. The hands themselves, and even worse the fingers, are generally the hardest hit when driving in winter. You should definitely treat them to a decent pair of winter gloves for cold days. There is a large selection here, and the MOTORRAD test is intended to provide orientation. Basically, winter gloves differ in models with five fingers and three-finger gloves. In the case of the “pig paws” who promise a higher heat output, the little and ring fingers as well as the middle and index fingers are each put together in a chamber and should warm each other like a couple under a blanket. Theoretically, because the practical tests showed that the five-finger models partially insulated equally well. And strong leaks like the Difi Husky or IXS Milton let the alleged advantage of a three-finger specimen quickly dissolve into (ice-cold) air in cold, wet weather.

Another problem with these models: The feel of the grip takes a lot of getting used to. Motorcycle beginners are advised to feel their way around carefully, otherwise you can sometimes slip into unexpected driving maneuvers and land nastily on the nose. And unfortunately the gloves, which are actually designed for extreme winters, didn’t necessarily shine when it came to safety. The three-fingered ones could be stripped off extremely easily (Held Talin, IXS Milton), the equipment with only a few double layers of material, pads and protectors generally left a lot to be desired. Only the pleasantly inexpensive one Probiker Cool breaker and the nicely made one Rukka GTX Lobster are recommended with great protection against the cold and good fall protection. It is undisputed that the five-finger winter gloves are the better choice in terms of safety and driving dynamics. Safety hardly plays a role in balaclavas, and active safety should not be impaired by poor wearing comfort. This is not the case with any hood, and almost every test candidate fulfilled the heaviest test criterion, weather protection of the neck and neck, with flying colors.

Those who ride a motorcycle in the cold are particularly at risk from cold bridges in these areas. In this area, the carotid artery and the jugular vein run just below the surface of the skin. A lot of body heat can be dissipated here by the airstream, and there is a risk of hypothermia with cold consequences. And a cold neck leads to uncomfortable muscle tension. Closed storm hoods, ideally with extra wind protection and warming fleece material, should therefore be part of the basic equipment in winter. The versatile multi-scarf from Buff, which can also be used as a balaclava, is very appealing, because outside the winter season the somewhat complicated balaclavas are more a matter of taste, while a scarf shouldn’t be dispensed with when riding a motorcycle. The hoods from Held, IXS and Rukka offer full protection and are extremely comfortable to wear.

If you, as a winter driver, manage to tear off all cold bridges as far as possible with harmonizing gloves, balaclava and motorcycle suit, the question arises: What to wear underneath? A lot helps a lot is only partially true, because if you put three or four thick sweaters on top of each other, you unnecessarily deprive yourself of your freedom of movement. It is correct to dress according to the onion principle with several, tight-fitting layers, between which the air can store its own body heat. This is also the best way to transport moisture to the outside. The first layer (new German: base layer) should be thin sports underwear made of pure synthetic fabric (optionally also a wool mix), on top of which comes the mid-layer, a breathable set made of microfleece or a medium-thick woolen knit. Depending on the cold, a thick fleece sweater, a functional undersuit or even a heated vest fits comfortably under the suit. So equipped, nothing stands in the way of a winter tour. But be careful with bridges, this time the normal ones: there is a particular risk of slipping due to freezing moisture. Please adapt your driving style as well as your clothing to the external conditions.

Well packaged your hands, neck and face? Wonderful, at least with the products rated as good and very good, nothing should burn on winter trips, or better said: nothing should freeze off. But gloves, a balaclava and the right clothing are often not enough. Even good winter clothing reaches its limits on frosty days. The situation quickly becomes precarious, especially on the feet. Special motorcycle winter boots are not normally included in the range, so for the cold season we recommend a tall, completely waterproof touring boot that offers enough space for two pairs of socks. You should put on thin sports socks with a high synthetic content directly on the foot, which absorb and distribute moisture optimally.

Thick wool socks are recommended as a second layer – outdoor products or high-quality ski socks cost less than 30 euros, but Mutti do it yourself, too. It is important that an insulating air cushion is created in the boot and that moisture (even normal foot sweat promotes cooling) can easily escape to the outside. If your own body heat is not enough, the specialist trade offers special heater (see photos on the right) such as a foot heater with rechargeable batteries (e.g. Footwarmer from Hotronic, www.hotronic.de, from around 160 euros) or the Very practical heat pillows from Heat Pax available from 1.60 euros (information from Nieman and Frey GmbH, phone 0 21 51/55 54 20, www.warmbleiben.de), which react chemically in the air and about Provide hours of pleasant warmth. After that, the non-toxic mini-inserts are thrown into normal household waste. Reusable gel heat cushions also work in a similar way (e.g. Probiker von Louis, phone 0 40/73 41 93 60, www.louis.de, 6.95 euros per pair), which are best placed under the kidney belt in order not to let the core of the body cool down. Vests that are heated by electricity are considered heavy artillery in the fight against freezing – but only if they work properly.
