The International Motorcycling Federation (FIM) has just announced that its commission in charge of the Superbike had met again during the final in Jerez to clarify – and! – the rules which will govern the WSBK in the future. The Dorna leg – – is very sensitive … Explanations.

"The Superbike committee, made up of Messrs Javier Alonso (WSBK Executive Director), Ignacio Verneda (FIM Executive Director, Sport Department) and Takanao Tsubouchi (representative of MSMA constructors) met at the Ricardo Tormo circuit on November 8, 2013", indicates the FIM.

During this meeting, most of the work of Daniel Carrera, Gregorio Lavilla (WSBK – Dorna) and Paul Duparc (FIM) – aimed at harmonizing the regulations of the Grand Prix and Wolrd Superbike championships – would have been validated (read also our).

In particular, it was decided to overhaul the format of qualifying in Superbike: the three-phase Superpole knockout event will be abandoned, while the duration and arrangement of the practice sessions will be inspired by .

More from Superpole

Thus, "a certain number of participants will be directly qualified in Q2", explains the FIM, and the slower drivers – and less exposed to the media, that’s the trick! – will fight in the first qualifying session (Q1) to be drafted.

Likewise, "the Sunday races in Superbike, Supersport and Superstock 1000 Cup will be condensed between 10:30 am and 2:30 pm". We imagine that the second SBK race will end a little before 2 p.m., so as not to encroach on the MotoGP or Formula 1 time slots..

The tests (excluding the race weekend) will always be strictly limited for the drivers and titular teams in WSBK. But we will take into account the fact that "some participate in both the WSBK and the endurance championship, thanks to the similarity of the EWC and EVO regulations", mischievously underlines the commission.

Points permit

On the other hand, the Superbike and Supersport races taking place in the wet will be reduced by two laps and the restart procedures – "in the event of a red flag being issued for reasons other than climatic", specifies the FIM – will be shortened..

Finally, the commission has chosen to introduce the system. The points lost will be lost over a period of one year: no question of wiping out the dirt made at the end of the previous season !

Stability is now ?

"A (final, Editor’s note?) Clarification of the rules will be made in view of the next meeting of the SBK commission to be held in Madrid in December", concludes the FIM, "taking into account that the 2015 WSBK regulations will have to continue , in order to give the discipline a certain stability ". Phew !

"The MSMA will also have to present common proposals aimed at ensuring the championship a low cost as well as a fair and close competition between the various manufacturers". A beautiful puzzle in perspective…
