By winning yesterday at Magny-Cours – and under the sun, please! – his sixth victory of the season, Sebastien Charpentier (Honda CBR600RR Winston Ten Kate n ° 16) seizes a second – unexpected – title of World Supersport champion !

"I couldn’t ask for more", explains the Charentais rider n ° 16 in a video interview with Moto-Net after a difficult season.

Magny-Cours, 08/10/2006 – Sebastien Charpentier has just won for the second time in a row the unexpected title of Supersport World Champion ! Video Site.

And indeed, the dream of a double coronation of the world champion – unheard of in the category! – seemed difficult to reach when arriving on the Nivernais circuit: due to the accumulated delay in the general classification this year (read our), Sebastien had not only to win the race but also to count on the fall of his main competitor, the favorite Kevin Curtain (Yamaha YZF R6 n ° 11), who had an 18-point lead and could settle for an eighth place at the finish to seize the world champion crown…

"I couldn’t ask for more!"

Impossible is therefore not French since the Australian, who started from fifth position on the grid, fell on the 8th lap and gave up while he was in fourth place….

Author of the pole, Charpentier can then take control of the race, protected by his teammate Kenan Sofuoglu (Honda CBR600RR n ° 54) in second position, in charge of blocking Broc Parkes, Curtain’s teammate (Yamaha YZF R6 n ° 23), if he was threatening from his third place…

"A fantastic day"

Just recovered from his fall during testing in Brno in June (read), Charpentier is struggling to achieve the feat he has just accomplished at the end of a difficult season. "When I saw on my panel that the n ° 11 was "out", I could not believe it because I know Kevin and I know that he is a good pilot.", explains the Charentais descending from his 8th podium (and 6th victory) this season.

"Yamaha worked really hard this year and at times Curtain and Parkes really gave me a hard time", recognizes the double Supersport world champion."After I fell in Brno, everything became very difficult and it was difficult to be at 100% of my physical capacities. I think my Winston Ten Kate Honda team is very strong. They were perfect, they prepared the ground well for me and my teammate had very good results in the last few races. For me it’s a fantastic day because I’ve had a really tough time this year, with the crash in Brno and racing in Germany. And I warmly thank Honda, because they have shown that the CBR600RR has great winning potential. !

For his part, Kenan Sofuoglu has mastered the situation perfectly by playing his role as General Seb ‘teammate: "I knew we had to team up during the race, so when I saw Sebastien pass I didn’t try to double him", explains the Turkish pilot."When I learned of Curtain’s abandonment, I realized that I could accelerate even more and fight for the victory, while allowing Sebastien to be crowned world champion … But it was risky and I always had Parkes behind me … next year I want to be even stronger and I will give everything to win !"

To follow the full report of the race, with in particular the beautiful fifth place of David Checa. Without forgetting of course the two rounds of Superbike, particularly contested even if the title was already acquired for Troy Bayliss (read), with the video interview of Regis Laconi and the arrival of Troy Corser within the official Yamaha team alongside Noriyuki Haga…
