Tom Sykes won with a breath his first duel against Jonathan Rea in the great American West, signing his seventh pole position of the 2016 WSBK season. Behind the two Kawasaki Ninjas qualifies Davide Giugliano on his Ducati.

Gathered on the podium of the second Superbike round at Misano, then above the lot during the official tests carried out the next day on the same Italian circuit, Sykes, Rea and Giugliano again form the "Top Three" at the end of the Superpole disputed at Laguna Seca (United States)…

At one and a half minutes from the end of SP2 (the final phase of the Superpole bringing together the 10 fastest drivers on Friday and two drivers drafted in SP1), Jonathan Rea was at the top of the timesheet, preceding Chaz Davies by more than seven tenths of a second !

Even making the most of his qualifying tire, Davide Giugliano then set the second fastest time of the session on his 1199 Panigale: faster than his brilliant Welsh teammate, the Roman rider was not quite on pace. of the "Number One" of the category.

Thirty seconds later, Tom Sykes in his turn tumbled into the line – not at all – right from Laguna Seca at the controls of his ZX-10R and managed to beat Rea’s time … by 55 thousandths of a second! "Super Sykes" thus recorded his fourth pole position in a row, the seventh this season (out of nine) and the 37th of his career. !

The n ° 66 therefore takes a slight advantage over his teammate and reigning world champion who, as a reminder, has a comfortable lead overall: 66 (!) Points more than Sykes, 99 more than Chaz Davies … and 178 more than Giugliano.

The Italian will have to be watched closely during the race because he will have nothing to lose! Above all, he will strive to achieve his very first World Superbike victory. But for this, the n ° 34 Ducati will have to keep from his thoughts the huge fall of last year which had prematurely ended his 2015 season….

For his part, the ruthless "JR" will try to win for the first time on the Californian circuit. His excellent time on soft rubber bodes well, as is the fact that he was leading SP2 after the first series of laps on hard rubber, ahead of Sykes, Davies, Lowes and Giugliano..

Author of an impeccable double at Laguna Seca in 2015, Chaz Davies was the fastest man on Friday. This Saturday noon (evening in France), the n ° 7 Ducati takes fourth time in the Superpole and will therefore install his beautiful Italian at the head of the second row.

Victorious four times this season and stepped on the podium on five other occasions, "Chazie" recorded too many DNFs ("Did Not Finish" or abandonment) to play the title to the end against Rea. He remains one of the big favorites of the two American races.

Fifth time in the last seconds of the Superpole, eight tenths of a second behind Kawasaki, Xavi Fores adds a third Panigale in the "Top Five". The Spanish outsider and his private machine beat the national star by nine thousandths of a second: 2006 MotoGP champion Nicky Hayden !

Double winner in the premier class at Laguna Seca, the legendary n ° 69 will seek to add his name to the short list of American riders who have won on the California circuit in World Superbike: Kocinski, Bostrom and Edwards. Spies is not there for a simple reason: in 2009, the WorldSBK went to Millermotorsport Park.

Note the beautiful ninth place of Niccolo Canepa, replacing Sylvain Guintoli at Misano and again at Laguna Seca, who qualifies in the wheel of Jordi Torres and Luca Savadori, and just ahead of his teammate Alex Lowes. The four drivers are only three hundredths of a second apart: this promises for the races !
