The pole for Smrz

For this 8th round of the World Superbike, contested on the shores of the Adriatic Sea, we expected the sun of course, but also a little rain (read). On the other hand, no one could have predicted what happened during the Supersport race, then during the second round of Superbike. !

From Saturday, the World Superbike is somewhat upset as Jakub Smrz (Ducati Guandalini) seizes pole, ending the impressive series of poles – 7 in a row – of rookie Ben Spies! The American is not very far, however: less than two tenths of the time of the Ducati n ° 96, he places his official Yamaha in 3rd position just behind Jonathan Rea (Honda Ten Kate) and ahead of Michel Fabrizio (Ducati Xerox).

This weekend marked the abandonment of the qualifying tire in favor of a "soft" tire allowing to line up more laps, at least five according to the manufacturer: a rubber which allowed the four pilots of the first row to beat the record set by Corser last year !

On the second row are two Ducatis, then two Honda: Shane Byrne (Ducati Go Eleven) is ahead of Noriyuki Haga (Ducati Xerox) and the two other riders of the Honda Ten Kate team – Carlos Checa and Ryuichi Kiyonari – who has obviously learned a lot. of his last private tests at Magny-Cours and now runs with Ohlins suspensions.

Max Biaggi and Shinya Nakano (Aprilia) supervise in 3rd row Leon Haslam (Honda Stiggy) and Fonsi Nieto (Suzuki Alstare). You have to wait for the 4th row to see the first BMW appear – that of Troy Corser, 15th – and an additional row for the first Kawasaki – that of Broc Parkes 19th.

On the French side, Matthieu Lagrive qualified 22nd on his first Mondial Superbike grid on the handlebars of his CBR1000RR prepared by his team Althea. David Checa, for his part, classified his GMT94 R1 in 25th place, just ahead of John Hopkins whose "real" return to competition is expected to take place in Donington in a week….

In Supersport, the qualifying session was considerably shortened by a downpour: it was only in the very last minutes that the drivers were able to take advantage of a dry track! Suddenly, two Italians stand out and climb to the front row.

The rookie Michel Pirro (Yamaha Lorenzini) pockets the first Superpole of his career ahead of the class leader Cal Crutchlow (Yamaha WSSP), the second local of the stage Massimo Roccoli (Honda Intermoto Czech) and the Ninja Katsuaki Fujiwara (Kawasaki Motocard .com).

At the top of the second row is a third Italian: Gianluca Nannelli and his Daytona prepared by the Parkingo BE1 team. The 675 is ahead of three CBR600RRs: those of Anthony West (Stiggy Motorsport), Mark Aitchison (Althea) and Crutchlow’s main championship rival, Eugene Laverty (Parkalgar)

The 2008 and 2007 world champions – Andrew Pitt and Kenan Sofuoglu of the Honda Ten Kate team – are respectively relegated to 9th and 11th positions, while Fabien Foret is far from 18th place.
